When my mom, myself and my son visited the Florida Botanical Gardens, while walking through one of the gardens, there was a wall covered by some sort of vine. When we got up closer and inspected, we saw the oddest flowers growing on it!
This first photo is a view of the garden, (with my son posing, lol) where the wall with the unusual flowers was. If you walked down this path, it took you to it.

When we walked up, at first we just saw a lot of theses beautiful green leaves...but then quickly spotted some purple!

hee, hee...my mom and I sort of have a sick sense of humor, and we were laughing and laughing....

I believe this would be 'before' the flower opens up...

And finally a shot of the pretty side! You can sort of tell how big they were from my hand in the corner...I had to hold it up to take the picture, the rain had it folded down.

So, anyone know what this is? It was a really lush plant, and grew all over the wall, beautiful!
*and of course all photos were taken by me, with my fugi finepix s5100

Thanks for the fun article.
I'd love it if you would post this to my group for all things to do with nature, animals, and pets!.
Thanks for posting this mother/daughter/son outing article in the new 'Mother's Day 2008' group, it's a nice addition.
:o)
It's called Elegant Dutchman's Pipe, or Calico Flower or Pelican Flower
Botanical Name: Aristolochia elegans
Here's the link to that page:
Elegant Dutchman's Pipe
(However, you MIGHT have to registered to see it -- I'm not sure...)
great essay
Thanks Jean for looking it up. It saved me from doing so cuz I would just have to find the answer, you know. :-)
