Another tidbit from this book I am reading: What You Don't Know May Be Killing You by Don Colbert M.D.

NutraSweet is made up of methanol and the amino acid phenylalanine and aspartic acid.

What is methanol? Websters Dictionary defines it as "a light volitile, flammable, poisonour liquid alcohol". Methanol is converted to formaldehyde-better known as emblaming fluid.

Is that what you want to be putting into your body?

a sign of methanol excess is a headache. Watch that diet soda!

NurtraSweet has been linked to memory loss, fatigue, dizziness, nausea, blurred vision, depression and hyperactivity in kids.

If you have any of these syptoms - eliminate NutraSweet (diet soda & the sugar packets) from your diet.

I used to have migrains and many other issues to the point where I would end up in the ER. Since eliminating aspertame 100% it was an amazing change. It has been a few years since I have had it as part of my diet. Durning this time I have had 2 migranes and been so sick. The first time it turned out someone made a chocolate creme pie with sugar free jello pudding (apsertame) the other time it turned out a piece of gum had aspertame in it. So now I read every single thing and if I cannot I do not eat or drink it.

I don't use the stuff and have no intention of doing so. I also try to avoid refined sugar, which is essentially a drug.

i have read about this, i read that the fda was not going to aprove apsertame, but then mysteriously there was a huge "donation" to the fda funding and then it was approved.... hmmm

I have been trying to steer clear of aspartarme, and I actually do not let my kids drink anything light or with aspartarme in it. I have read lots of studies, especially European and mainly British studies linking aspartarme to hyperactivity in kids.

aspartarme also effects prople with bi-polar dis order I know this for a fact and the FDA can't tell me any different

Yes, aspertame is very dangerous......that's just incredible that the FDA has approved it.....well, I don't listen to/believe them all that much anymore!!!!! That book is an excellent one....I lost my copy so am gonna have to get another from Amazon.com! He is a really great doctor!

I use sugar or honey....the artificial sweeteners give me migraines.

It incensed me when this NutraSweet product first came out and people were giving it to their children. Any and all artificially produced sugars and foods are absolutely not fit for human consumption. Good article, Priscilla. I would just not wait until the symptoms were evident to quit using the junk.

Artificial sweeteners always make me feel sick. Growing up, I never could figure it out (my mom is a diabetic, so we used them quite often). Once I was out on my own, I finally figured out the link. Elliott doesn't get anything with artificial sweeteners, and I don't either anymore. We limit the sugar and honey as well, but allow it in moderation.
I agree Sue B. don't wait for symptoms to stop using it. Use regular sugar vs artificial sweeteners.

Katherine, at least Stevia is a just a plant root, not a substance manufactured in a lab. The artificial stuff scares me... yikes!

Tiffany, isn't it weird that they caution against its use during pregnancy--- but it is OK when you are not pregnant? Uh...sure.

I really have to watch that I don't eat any Splenda. I get horrible migranes from it. I'm not as careful about the others, but I can REALLY tell the difference in taste with them so I don't eat them anyway. I have found Splenda hidden in things that were not marked as sugar free (also labeled as Sucralose). When I do get a migrane I check everything I have eaten and I almost always find something that has Splenda that I didn't know.
