ACLU attacks Christmas!!?

I don't think that Bush's administration would ever loose Christmas, they would give it some other holiday name. After all it means big $$$ for the economy and TAXES. Call it "International Winter Solace Day"

Thanks for posting this article. I'm so sick of stupid statements being made about the ACLU by conservatives who are completely ignorant of what the ACLU is really about because they just buy hook, line and sinker what the Bush administration and any other right wing nut jobs are saying.

Go to the source and learn before you spout out those stupid statements about liberals. You wouldn't know what liberals are all about because you're too damned lazy to THINK and research yourself.

I support the ACLU most of the time. I do think it is a bit hypocrytical of them to not support gun owner's rights though.

The problem that evanglical conservative republicans have with the ACLU is actually the problems they have with the founding fathers, the constitution, and the bill of rights, from wiretapping, expansive executive power, military adventurism, voting rights, separation of church and state, the role of the judiciary to provide a check against the other houses of government. And Dan, you are right on - you can't pick and choose what parts of the constitution you do and don't support - the ACLU should be rationally supporting completely the second amendment. No matter how you twist it, it's written in plain english and we all know why its there. It weakens the ACLU that they are not consistent.

I think they have gotten lost in recent years. It seems they want to take on controversial stuff to get in the papers not help the little guy anymore. Too political.

Thanks for the feedback, everyone. I just can't stand the continual assaults being made by the current administration against everyone who disagrees with them.

About the Second Amendment- I think the NRA has huge amounts of money and resources with which to defend the right to bear arms (or arm Bears?). Perhaps that is why the ACLU leaves it to them- I'm pretty sure the NRA can better afford it. I personally disagree with some interpretations of the second ammendment (Assault rifles and handguns for everyone) but I am glad for the 3 branch process our government uses to balance things, if they are going to insist on not obeying MY wishes.

(After all, as we ALL know- I am RIGHT, and everyone else is just WRONG! OK, I might not have a "mandate", but I've had a date with a man...)

John- as for the little guy, you made me wonder about this- I checked the cases they tried before the Supreme court and found mostly (but not all) biggies. I found you can link to the local offices and find more of the kind of trials you're talking about, as well as how to get their help. They DO still give legal assistance to people whose civil rights have been violated. Even though most of what you see on the national site is big and political, they still are there for the little guy.

We are at a critical point in our Nation's history- trying to balance our present sense of safety with the future of our Democracy. I see TRUE Democracy as depending on everyone having equal rights under the law, so I proudly support the ACLU. I don't agree with everything they've done, but it is an organization which will stand up for anyone's civil rights, no matter how hated (the KKK) or lowly (politcal prisoners) they are.

I hope that isn't on the ACLU's agenda. I would have a hard time giving up my Christmas manger stocked with the characters from "Rudolph, The Red Nosed Reindeer." It would seem so unfair to target my second favorite pagan based holiday.

Don't you remember the outcries last year that someone was trying to take Christmas away from the people who stand in line all night and beat up old ladies to get the most expensive popular toy for their precious child whose life will be ruined if Christmas is relegated to religious ceremony without consumerism? This isn't anything new, they've just started whining earlier this year.

Interesting. The one and only thing I have to commend the current administration on is their expertise in mis-direction. Personally, even though I am not a card carrying member of the ACLU (Thinking about it), I agree that they strike a balance. Much like the Electronic Frontier Foundation (Of which I am a paying member) do in the industry of technology. Some of the issues the ACLU take on, I do not agree with and this has been the only reason I am not a member.

It really scares me that some people are going to buy in to this? For the first time, I intend to be on the ground in the next election educating people about the issues the candidate I support stands for. I'm not sure at this point who that is going to be, but we all need to act instead of just talking about it online.

Sandy- Those people are why I have the Massacree. I get a bunch of friends together and we get together, decide our route and what we want to sing over soup and wine, then set out, Home made "hymnals" in hand, to surprise people in their homes with the joyous Noise.

Lisa- Me, too! This year, I am going reverse trick or treating. It's BIG fun! You get dressed up like Ward and June Cleaver and go door to door. When people answer, you say "Oh, My, Don't you look Cute?!" and offer them the bowl of candy. It is particularly entertaining in the student slums of a college town, where every other house is full of stoned people.

You've got that right Kevin. That's why I sent this article with the ad attached to virtually everyone on my email list- especially the one who sent me the petition!

I personally think there are probably aspects of "Christmas" that ought to be attacked by somebody. It's become so NOT about Christ, that the title of the holiday kind of gives me the willies.

The 'christian' attitude really goes downhill about November, when certain groups decide the malls and pretty much every public building belong to them, and everyone else should say the words they want to hear and celebrate the way they want to celebrate (which is often push everyone else aside to get what or where they want, while shouting "Merry Christmas NOT Happy Holidays".

I do not go to Malls between Halloween and New Years. That helps a lot.
