Maybe. I guess if the MSM can stay off of the lipstick-type wedge issues, maybe we can have an election based of real issues for a change. People in this country deserve an election that is based on the real issues.

But hey, cheer up, hopefully Bush won't completely wipe you out and in about ten or fifteen years your stocks and mutual funds will be back up to where they were a week ago, unless, of course, Perry provided a fixed rate pension. Somehow, I don't think so.

As a distraction, why don't you go off and look for where I ever said polls were unimportant. That search should keep you out of everyone's hair for a few years. I probably did say polling may be skewed to the old school voters like you in that who is at home with a land line in the middle of the day or at least doesn't have caller ID which either blocks such calls or screens them. That fact of modern life makes these numbers even better for Obama.

The Republican aparatcheks are usually all over the poll results when McSame is leading.

It looks lke things are beginning to break for Obama. We just have to get to the polls, volunteer and donate as much as we can.

I've gotten to the point where I don't even bother with the candidates' wish lists. Plans have a way of going awry once the election is over and the political dust is settled. The government, thanks to Bush and six years of his rubber-stamp Congress, have put us so deeply in hock that lovely plans for, say, universal health care are going to be unattainable. I'm for a corporate tax cut -- a McCain thing -- because I know that our corporate tax rates are very high compared to the rest of the world and that is hurting the industrial sector and those who work in it. Blue-collar workers, to be exact. I like Obama's desire to ease up on some taxes on the middle class and raise marginal rates on the wealthiest 5%. Trickle down doesn't work.

So what I'm now looking for is the temperament, intelligence, good judgment, and willingness to listen, debate, and accept facts as valid. And there Obama shines.

My concern is that even with corporate tax cuts, companies don't use the additional revenue to create jobs. We've seen the example of the oil companies, where despite record breaking profits they spend the majority of their windfall to buy back their own stock and give their stockholders record dividends.

And let me say that I want companies to be profitable, but I want them to be profitable AND create new jobs.

Thank goodness that people are starting to wisen up. When you look at the financial advisers for the McCain campaign, they are a couple of losers who brought chaos to their respective employers. Phil Gramm was the senator who came up with the legislation which destroyed the firewall between the financial institutions and investment firms--creating the mess we now have. Carly Fiorina was fired by HP for running the company into the ditch.

I agree with you, Erik, in general. I think, though, that if lower corporate taxes (not slashed, mind, but in line with Europe) can help competitiveness, companies will grow and be more profitable. That should translate into more jobs and decent benefits. If we have a Congress that keeps an eye on these things rather than on how much they can wring out of these companies for their campaign coffers, we might just be able to do something for "the rest of us." Hope springs eternal, right?

Here's a hopeful note: Obama has typically run ahead of his polls.

I wonder what the numbers would be in a poll that asks if the responder thinks the earth is still flat, the moon made of green cheese and whether they trust a black man to be president. ;)

In my view, a big polling lead is critical. If we were to go into election day with a percentage point or two separating the candidates, the great likelihood is that the election would be determined by voter suppression, other voter disenfranchisement and rigging of tallies on electronic voting machines. A large percentage gap minimizes the impact of these strategies.
