In the Democratic party, the two groups at odds are the Clinton Democrat, and the Ted Kennedy old guard progressive. The Clintonian Democrat is known for bringing down the debt, and other things that the progressives did not approve.
If elected, Obama can't sell his plans to Congress, so what difference does it make that he can sell a progressive message to a progressive core of voters? Progressives have always been outnumbered, but they haven't lost as many races as they have in recent years.
The DNC started running moderate Democrats in purple States, and have been winning more often than not. These moderates are not necessarily Clintonian, but do align themselves with one of the two factions.
McCain is a moderate in a party that started purging moderates in the mid seventies. So, while Ted Kennedy is the standard bearer for progressives, McCain is a moderate in a party that does not promote moderates.
These four groups, two in each party, have either worked it out, as the Republicans have, or will split the party, as the Democrats are doing.
If the Democratic party can't field a candidate to work with the new center-left Congress, then the center-right candidate, John McCain, should garner the majority of votes in November.
