
During a speech in Michigan last Monday, Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee uttered the following. "I have opponents in this race who do not want to change the Constitution. But I believe it's a lot easier to change the Constitution than it would be to change the word of the living god. And that's what we need to do -- to amend the Constitution so it's in God's standards rather than try to change God's standards so it lines up with some contemporary view." As bizarre as this statement is, it still begs the question of which interpretation of just what God is should our constitution be amended. I'm assuming Huckabee must be talking about his brand which is the Southern Baptist interpretation.
So what would a Southern Baptist theocracy look like? Well, according to Mike Huckabee the first order of business would be for everyone in America to start carrying a concealed hand gun because that is supposed to miraculously stop violence. Teaching Genesis and conducting ALL our children in Southern Baptist style prayer in our public schools would be in and teaching evolution and sex education would be out. Gays and lesbians would be rounded up and jailed of course along with anyone else deemed to be a sinner since committing anything judged by the Southern Baptist doctrine to be a sin would now be a violation of the U.S. Constitution. And another item on his "ban-it" list will be to overturn Roe v. Wade. But it won't stop there folks. Before long they'll be telling you what to wear, how to cut your hair, and what music, books, and movies are allowed. And forget tattoos and piercing because these activities are the work of the Devil and will be outlawed as well.
The most disturbing thing about Huckabee's words is that he is serious people. And what's even more disturbing is how many people still see him as a viable presidential candidate. I was happy to see how poorly he did in New Hampshire and Michigan and hopefully it is a sign of things to come. But the idea that there are that many of my fellow citizens who think amending our constitution to align with the Judeo/Christian Bible is a good idea has me mesmerized. Perhaps we need a lesson as to why our forefathers insisted a separation of church and state clause be included in that prophetic document called the U.S. Constitution. And that reason is that the practice of forcing religion on people was and always has been nothing more than a method for controlling them.
Governor Huckabee is out of his mind if he thinks this will fly in a general election. And the Republicans would be out of their minds if they were to nominate him. This guy is fringe in a big way. I'm reminded of the outlandish statements made by another evangelical minister who also won the Iowa caucus, Pat Robertson. The only conclusion this correspondent can come to is that the only reason a nut like Huckabee could have gotten this far, is that the Republican Party is in complete disarray and have lost their way.

Sorry buddy, I went ahead and wrote one because I hadn't seen any mention of it here. But the more voices, the better I always say. Look forward to reading it.
Huck didn't present well in NH. As far as I'm concerned, he's not a true contender.
The Constitution, as I learned it, anyway, was based largely on the government of the Iroquios Confederacy and British common law. Has this changed since I went to school?
But many on the Right want to think it has.
The two documents do not even speak the same language in some ways. One could argue that there is a sort of Jesus "tone" to the Constitution, , a humanisitic approach that is more interested in rights and forgiveness than in punitive punishment. But that is only true of half of what Jesus said, the other half was more religiously absolutist, and that bit is missing.
But as a Democrat, I'll have to admit the idea of having Huckabee to run against would make this way too easy.
Look at the preamble only, and this just touches the surface of how you can see that the Constitution needs not be rewritten to conform to Christian principles:
"We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defence, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America."
Justice is certainly a very much talked about principle in the Bible. Tranquility, or peace, is also mentioned frequently. Promoting the general welfare is also a Judeo/Christian principle. The fact that they allude to liberty as a blessing, rather than a triumph of their own doing, is also significant.
She knew it was true though.
Anyone who claims or has claimed to support illegality does not support the Consititution of the United States of America.

Huckabee represents one branch of the Republican Right; Ron Paul represents another. Most of the others are from some of the varying shades near the middle (CEO, actor, big city mayor).
Although many outsiders tend to see the Republican Party as homogeneous, the truth is that it is made up of factions that band together under certain similar attitudes to achieve certain similar goals. Neocon and Christian Conservative Right are only the branches that have been dominating lately.
The bottom line always seems that Republicans want to control what citizens do; with the exception of Ron Paul.

Take a look at the Spanish Inquisition or the Talaban in Afghanistan for just two examples. There are thousands of other examples all over the world, in every major period of history.
Our founding fathers set up this country with the principal of separation of Church and State for many very good reasons. They had fled Europe from church sponsored governments and well knew the dangers of letting any church or government too much power. They hoped to avoid the many problems that those governments had by starting a new system of government free of this type of unbridled power.
It would be a tragic shame if we allowed the power hungry to change our country into one of the places that they were trying to prevent for all times.

You got it all wrong. Republicans want to give more power to the people and Democrats want to take that power and give to government. I love how this snowball becomes an avalanche and people predicting that we are going to put people in jail based on church rules.
With the exception of the Libertarian and Moderate Republicans, Republicans have always been the officials most known for legislating rights and protections away from the citizenry; mostly by legislating and proscribing rights for corporations that trump the rights of civilians.
When the name of Conservative Christians gets raised in political spheres it has always been tied to the Republican party; never the Democratic Party (to my recollection).
And Conservative Christians have been the people who blamed things like 9/11 on the permissiveness of non-condemnation; and The Katrina Disaster on the practice of too loose morals. Of course if that were true, Las Vegas would have been hit, not the wards of New Orleans.
Republicans created Guantanimo, a prison where anyone can be held indefinetly for merely being accused of being a terrorist; and the Conservative Christians have spawned the most vocal of those proclaiming all Muslims potential terrorists.
Over the past fifty years, it has been Republican presidents that have waged wars unpopular with the American people, and it has been Republicans and Conservative Christians who have most often quelled dissent by quelling free speech.
Republicans have been the champions of the "win through any method" ideal; and they have been caught the most for operating outside of the rules and laws.
Given the history and the record, being watchful and concerned is completely legit.
No to mention the fact that our founding fathers advised wariness towards all political groups; especially those that sought to change government primarily from religious fervor.
These people absolutely want to re-create this nation into a Christian theocracy, make no mistake about it. I know one of these people, and we've had very lengthy discussions about this, and trust me, in their heart of hearts, they honestly believe that it is THEIR DUTY to tear up the constitution and institute a theocratic dictatorship here, "in order to promote God's will."
Where do you think this absurd "war on Christmas" nonsense comes from? Same with the constant ramming of Christian religious doctrines into public schools and buildings. Where do you think that assinine abuse of federal power and violation of the constitution regarding Terry Schaivo came from?

First, WHEN will Christian Conservatives get that the very reason they can insist that the Constitution adhere to Christian values is that it DOESN'T? WHY do they continue to believe that even if the Constitution was changed according to their wishes, it still might not change according to their particular beliefs?
Second reaction: Hmmm, a document that forbids charging interest on a debt. One that mandates service by everyone. One that charges citizens to "bear one another's burdens". And a 10% "flat tax". Doesn't sound too bad at that!

1. The Constitution would have to include a acknowledgement of the Christian-Judaic god as existing and being the only god.
2. Making an image of anything in the heavens above, that is beneath the earth or in the waters beneath the earth and worshipping it would be unconstitutional. In addition to making the image of a Hindu or Buddhist god unconstitutional, how this would have to be worded to allow the photographing and praising of other humans or natural objects such a flowers, birds, fish, etc., is more than a bit tricky and too long for a comment.
3. It would be unconstitutional to talke the name of the god that the Constitution recognized in vain. Since there is disagreement what constitututes taking god's name in vain this provisions of the Constitution would have to be explanding upon.
4. Either the Chiristian or Judaic Sabbeth would have to be declared a day of rest and it would be unconstitutional to labor on whichever day that was determined to be.
5. It would be unconstitutional to be disrespectful of one's parents even if there was reason not to respect one or both of them.
6. It might be unconstitutional to kill another human being even in self-defense because there would be know way of knowing if an attacker had changed his or her mind about attacking you after you took defensive action.
7. It would be unconstitutional to commit adultery. To be line with virtually all interpretation of the Bibie this would have to include any sexual act outside of marriage.
8. It would be unconstitutional to steal so much as four leaf clover from a public park or your neighbor's lawn.
9. It would unconstitution to tell a lie even about something so simple as who abscounded with the contents of the cookie jar.
10. It would be unconstituional to covet (want) anything that you do not already possess.
I challange anybody to come with with a constitution that includes to above list of "do nots" Some of them were incorporated in some of our criminal codes, but have been over the years have been eliminated from our criminal codes because what constituted a crime was arbitrary and infringed on the right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.
The notion is ridiculous even if we assumed you could get two of them to agree on what should be changed. Could we dance or would that be a sin? Would church attendance be mandatory? Which church then? Could we play cards? Could women wear pants in public? Would a woman be chastised and shunned if she did not submit herself to her husband in all things? Would women even be allowed to work? Would we stone our disobedient children? If some nut thought god was ordering him to sacrifice his son, would he walk if he did it? Would we require our females to separate themselves during their periods because they were unclean, and refrain from fixing food? Would no one be allowed to eat shellfish or pork?
As you can see there would have to be a lot of changes, and those were just off the top of my head. Since it would be a Christian nation, I am assuming that people of all other faiths would be invited or forced to leave. That will be interesting.
Huckabee is a Christian, but whats the big deal? They way people talk about him, you would think the guy is like the Ayatollah. He does not want to limit civil liberities, oppress minorities and women, destroy the constitution and replace it with the bible, or make church mandatory. Besides being against Christian and his personal principles, that would be impossible with out system of government. Huckabee is not a threat. He is just serious about his faith. Nothing is wrong with that, and it should not be an issue. Making it an issue is against everything America stands for. Just leave the guy alone on his faith. If you must attack him, attack him on the issues. But we should not be so low and so shallow as to attack his faith.
Just as an aside, I live in Massachusetts, home of gay marriage. God hasn't struck us all down with his mighty wrath. My husband didn't leave me to run away with the mailman. I haven't been menaced by lesbians. It is has no effect on straight society.
What I hate the most about evangelical Christians is the way they pick out things from the Bible and ignore the most important points. Will we ever see evangelicals protesting against Wall Street greed because Jesus spoke very strongly about the evils of riches? Never! They use the Bible so they can feel smug and morally superior to non-evangelicals.
I don't want our next president to be hard focused on inconsequential things rather than on the things that count such as border security, immigration, the economy, the war, and a dozen other critical issues.
Overall, I'd say the reaction by the public to this statement by Huckabee has been underwhelming. The rabbles would have been much more roused had a candidate stated they wanted to change The Constitution to bring it in line with the God(s) of The Book of Mormon or The Koran.
Our government is not supposed to specifically mirror or enforce the beliefs of any one religion. Our government is supposed to be humanitarian and secular. This was established so as not to alienate or oppress every individual's right to worship as they see fit.

The fact is that Huckabee's faith should not matter. He brings it up to demonstrate that he is a moral and committed person. But he has never said he wants to make the US a theocracy. He has never said he wants to take away civil liberties. He just wants to do what is moral, which is prevent gay marriage and unnecessary abortions. Thats it. John Edwards asserts the same positions, and he said it was because of his faith. Why are people not scared of Edwards creating a theocracy? Obama is part of a church that advocates black sepratism. Where is the media coverage of that? If you don't like Huckabee's positions, then just say that. But don't go attacking his faith.

I guess I got a little caught up in the argument. I sould be saying that we should not attack his position on his faith. It should not matter that he is very serious about his faith. Faith is not an issue, therefore his faith and how serious he is about it should not matter. Ok, he uses his faith to justify his positions. Big deal. So does every other candidate, Democrat and Republican. Doing so does not violate the constitution. The phrase "seperaton of chruch and state" is not in the constitution. "Seperation of church and state" is really more tradition than it is law. But he is not planning to make the US a theocracy. He is not the Ayatollah. I am defending our nation's Constitutional principle, that the people can live free from having specific religious values forced upon them.
This statement by Huckabee's is not just a quaint pastoral painting of his personal faith. It's a statement of his plan to change the Constitution, in a way that will force all people to adhere to certain tenants of Huckabee's chosen faith.
For the examples you have chosen, let me point out that marriage is a personal right shared by both the religious and non-religious, equally; where only the definitions of what is sanctified or condoned vary from belief system to belief system.
Once upon a time, cultural groups used to fight over Catholics marrying Jews, or whites marrying blacks, and it was all fodder for the national news, but the federal government never interjected in these sometimes bloody skirmishes because they knew it wasn't their place according to our Constitutional principles.
In America, as established under our Constitution, it is not supposed to be the purveyance of government to dictate who can or cannot get married. That choice has always been left up to the individual. Gay folk should have the right to civilly sanctioned marriages. It would be a boon to the divorce industry.
In the case of abortion, there are a minuscule amount of the population who are actually pro-abortion. The majority of the populace are pro legalization for the sake of regulation in order to protect the populous from the horrors of the underground abortion procedures; which will suffer a heady return should Roe v. Wade be reversed.
The fact about abortion that everyone seems to ignore, is that a woman CAN have an abortion, regardless of whether government condones or regulates, criminalizes or punishes it.
For the sake of the well being of the populous, abortion needs to stay legalized.

The point is, criticism of these statements by Huckabee is not an attack on his religion, they are attacks on his statements. He said he plans to modify the Constitution, and thus the nation, by making things line up with HIS interpretation of HIS Holy Book.

I have read the King James version of the bible and personally I don't want to live under those rules. I don't want to live under the rules of any religion. What is even more egregious is that he wants to force people from other cultures who come here with their own religions to be ruled by his. Christianity is far too fragmented to ever be able to pick a particular flavor and then shove it down everyone's throats and expect them to take it.
Thank goodness Huckabee decided to out himself as the religious nutcase he is, and thus spare the Republicans the humiliation of his overwhelming defeat at the polls. Even those who agree with his positions for the most part understand that you cannot impose your religious convictions onto others by force, which is what he is proposing.

I'll mirror Carolyn's comment in that the founders of our country made sure that our constitution is very hard to change just so these types of fears could be lessened.
Just as when Thomas Jefferson assured the Danbury Baptists that they would continue to enjoy the right to practice their faith, our constitution also assures the right of Presidential candidates to express their beliefs also.

Bush said in his state of the union address: "If judges insist on forcing their arbitrary will upon the people, the only alternative left to the people would be the constitutional process."
Polls indicate that the majority of americans do NOT favor gay marriage. When people ask about a constitutional amendment then 58% say they do not favor a constitutional amendment...in essence, people feel that it should be illegal but left up for the states to decide.
I will not vote for a religious fanatic, who wants to take over my life anyway they can, involving an "army" of citizens, who will jump on that bandwagon, and think they have done a "Christian" or any other "God related request, and suddenly, everything will be alright. And I pray those who have access to what could be a true political platform, related in anyway to God, have the wisdom and courage to let us know, that this is the basis for someone running. God belongs to the singular person. If your concept of God is similar to that of a fellow American, share that in your Church of choice, not at the polls. According to my limited knowledge, God, WAS NOT ELECTED> His concept, of what he means, and the thoughts behind a "church" may have been chosen, but not by the singular thoughts of one person. He was "Elected" by a candidate to further there position, or there advancement in government, and how shoddy is that. To take faith, and make it a bargaining chip in a "human" procedure. And so far, what religion has stopped all wars, stopped the killing stopped need, and so on. Only God created. Man is hell bent on destruction. And those will unselfishly give of themselves, in the day to day world, do not need a huge "group" to do good. Just a belief. That need for a "Gang" of like religious thoughts or beliefs, to me, can only be a doubter, one who has to have earthly confirmation, or who will use that, to further themselves. I would, personally be afraid to "Use God". I will not associate my "God" with any destructive or harmful to anyone platform. One look at a sunrise tells me God has nothing to do with bills, articles, platforms, etc. I know of no one on Earth, who can create like that. Trying to harness "God's" word or power for political power, is to me, obscene. And I only wish to vote on the platform, that addresses the problems that man has created, not dump the whole thing on "God". It is seeing a sunrise,, a new life, all of that, well, it reminds me everyday of "God's" faith in the world he created, and the new opportunity each day, to be kind, and as beautiful inside with giving hope, and being a decent person, that let's me know, my thoughts of Him, would be way out of place, should I place someone in, or be a part of it, in that Oval office. That is a place for a Man. If he is a Godly man, however it be defined, and it is good, that is one thing, but to drag an interpertation of how to govern in that office, and say "God" says this is right, is to me, a huge ego problem. Just don't plan on electing a person on their religious beliefs. That would be a win with a form of power tripping all over it. Being a good man/woman is credential enough. Do you think Huckabee got a letter from God telling him that he should be on this particular" road" to the White House". Probably not. So I am going to vote for a man, who keeps his religion, and the right to practice it, private in many ways. I like to pray by myself, I do not need a back-up for that. And for those who say there are benefits, life is better etd. because they are a better off because of their beliefs, that is fine, but also, they need to remember they are a group, and with many they can do a lot, it is sad the religion makes them feel that God approves of the attitude that they "take care of their own'. I am content that my concept is that God takes a look at everyone. Period. By the way, political groups are a lot of people believing in a certain way, but they are political, not based on the interpetation of some man who claims to be doing the work of God. He should be buying a weeks worth of groceries for a poor family, that is the work of God.. as far as I see it. And would a conflicting opinion here mean that I am not with God in my life? Because it is simple? Not garnering power? Just doing good when I can in my own little world? I think not. One of America's most cherished freedoms is the freedom to choose how we worship, or even choose not to worship at all. That's as it should be. Nobody should be required to abide by or observe another person's religions tenets.
The whole gay marriage/choice arguments are simply a smoke screen for even more sinister attempts to force one or another brand of religious thought onto the country. As someone else here said: if you don't believe in gay marriage then don't marry someone of your same gender. If you don't believe in choice then don't choose. Just don't force me to believe the same way.

Here let me recap, even though our constitution does not allow religon to be forced on anyone and our fore fathers made sure there were methods in place to assure it would not happen, you all are all afraid that it will, even to the extent that you have perverted that section of the constitution that declares a freedom of religon into a freedom from religion.
If we look at the group who has most called for the change of our constitution it is not the faithful it is the liberal.

Dan: It's not really terrible. It just makes you vigilant since we know that the really extreme religions types will never stop until they force all of us to accept their ideas and behave as they say (not as they do. That's another issue entirely). Yes. We now have freedom from religion in that we are not obliged to make a choice and we can choose ot to be religious at all. Religion cannot be forced upon us as Huckabee is trying to do.
The Constitution says the state cannot sponsor a religion. That is exactly what Huckabee is trying to do with his desire to rewrite the Constitution. He wants his particular brand of Christian values made into law so that even those of us who do not follow that particular credo are forced to do so under the threat of legal action against us.
Perhaps you do not find that frightening because this time it doesn't infringe on your particular values. But therein lies the danger. What if the next thing to come down the line were something that violated all of your values. But you had to do it anyway because it was now in the Constitution? Maybe sacrificing your first born child? Stoning your child to death if he disobeyed? It doesn't matter what it is. What matters is that suddenly someone is taking away your freedoms in the interest of their religious beliefs. That's unacceptable.
The same can be said of liberals!
The more radical Conservatives want to control every aspect of people's behavior in the name of their particular religious doctrine. That is not right. You follow your beliefs. I will follow mine. We both must accept the consequences of our choices.
For example, we have a completely corrupt money system due to the illegal and unConstitutional creation of the private Federal Reserve Bank! In 1913, we let our congress, and then president Woodrow Wilson sell out our monetary supply to corrupt foreign bankers lead by the Rothchilds of England! So now, instead of our government being able to coin our own money for us, we have to borrow it from the federal reserve, and pay interest on it!
The only reason they unConstitutionally created the federal income tax back then was to pay the interest on these 100% unecessary loans! Before then, our government ran fine on income from tariffs..etc...and we had our own money system free from bankers controlling it! And NO federal income tax on labor!!
The unPatriotic Act was another slam on all of our rights guaranteed under our Constitution. Bush even went so far as to say, "it's only a piece of paper!" Our fricken forefathers fought with their lives to grant us the rights under our Constitution, and we let politicians illegally destroy it right before our faces, and laugh about it!! I will gladly fight any terrorists...foreign or domestic, but will not give up any of my Constitutional rights to these corrupt rats who run our country now! The biggest terrorists right now are our government!!
I have no idea what Huckabee's point was in his speech, and don't care! If we eliminate the federal reserve, corporate lobbying, the unPatriotic Act, and Federal Income taxes on labor, then we will have restored our Constitution to a state that any God would be proud of!
Sadly, now the banks run our government, and they now own almost 100% of our media due to lack of monopoly fighting in our government any more. Mainstream media...television and news papers are now nothing more than propaganda machines for the wealthy. It's no secret that we could have secured our Mexican Border long ago, and that we did not have to ship almost ALL of our manufacturing jobs overseas. This is just a few more unConstitutional acts being carried out by the power mongers who run our country, and it isn't Bush!!! He is no more than a pawn! The real kings run the world bank!
The only candidate who could make any difference is Ron Paul, but since even our electronic voting is now compromised, there is no way he could win, and even if he did...the power brokers would eliminate him just like JFK was eliminated. Don't tell me that after 50 years of our government being owned by world bankers, that they could not knock off JFK, and pin it on Oswald!!
I have to laugh at the 9/11 conspiracy disbelievers when I hear them rant on against irrefutable evidence of a massive coverup of the true 9/11 story! The crime of the century or millenium, and all evidence is destroyed PRIOR to any investigation? Any police officer...even one walking a beat...knows that you preserve the evidence until the investigation is done. in the case of the WTC...all steel was quickly cleaned up, and shipped to China for recycling! I laughed when I saw they solved the case on 9/11! Osama Bin Laden was tried, and convicted of the attacks in litterally hours!
Okay, if you are a diehard idiot, who does not know when you are being screwed, and can't beleive our government would kill it's own citizens, then please explain how we ended up in Iraq? Saddam Hussein did not threaten our country in any way. He had no nuclear program, and if he had any bio or gas WMD's left in his arsenal, then guess where he bought them from? Yes, the United States of confusion!
Nowhere in the Constitution does it state that our country can attack a sovereign nation to control it's oil supplies, or bring democracy to them! We don't even have democracy here any more....how can we let our government tell us we are spreading it?
We all sit by and watch our Constitution get trashed by corrupt politicians owned by the world bank! Listen to the politicians now...every one of them uses the word "change" constantly...the only thing they will be changing in the next election is who the puppets are! All they have to do is declare that the Federal Reserve has no Constitutional grounds to ever exist, and most of our federal debt will dissapear in the blink of an eye! Our government is 100% corporate fascism, and bears no resemblance to a democracy any more! I thought God wanted all to share in the earth...not for a few bizarre power brokers to control it all! God sure does not support Paul Wolfowitcz! He is as close to Satan as you can get here on earth!!!
We are all so far in debt, that they have a stranglehold on our country now! They foreclose on mortgages, and blaim it on bad loans...when in reality...is is just good folks who are losing their jobs due to poor government control over our country. Sure, loan a guy with a good job money to buy a house, and then ship his job to China!
We are forced to pay so many taxes that it is unbelievable. One should be able to live here, and pay almost no taxes if you don't want government services. I would gladly opt out of the education system, the police, and fire...etc...Believe me, I'll make sure my house never burns down, and protect my family on my own! Property taxes are the most distasteful of any taxes we pay! If you own your property...there is no reason to be taxed to live on it!!! Especially based on some false value that the government gives to it! There is no way I could ever sell my house at any price since I live in Michigan!!! It's basically worth zero, but I pay taxes on $165,000.
