I'm going to ask posters to name their beverage, then write "To the worthy opponent", but first, some stories to illustrate.
I got the idea for this post while in the yard with my leaf blower. There was no wind at all, so I didn't even need a blower strategy, and life was good. One leaf in particular was not behaving. It seems nature made this one perfectly aerodynamic, it shot straight up, which none of the others were doing, and continued to land behind me. I'm sure I muttered "all right, you", as I backtracked again, and again. Eventually I realized I had been bested by a leaf, and continued to the next parcel.
Story number two.
None of my first choices made it out of the primaries, and on to my ballot today. I eventually voted for one Republican, one Democrat, and two IP (Minnesota Independence party) candidates. I had lawn signs for all but McCain, which I asked for, but it never came.
OK, maybe your worthy opponent is a ten year old little girl, who won't get dressed for school, but I ask you now to make this simple toast to your own worthy opponent on this election night. Thank you.

Because of the tangle in media, we all sort of benefit from each other's coverage... less of clear opponent than a bit of an competition. To that end, I raise the final draw of my first cup of coffee to all the media outlets there, from CNN to the Independents to the bloggers to the Twitter users. To our shared pursuit of telling the best story first.
