I bet someone has already written about this on Gather, but just in case no one has and since it's heavy on my mind today -- there are some things about the computer's "spell check" I love and appreciate. On the other hand, I hope future manifestations of it will consider context and the appropriate word rather than just correcting the spelling. My pet peeves are as follows:
Reigned in...as the king reigned in his ministers? I think not...I think he reigns over his ministers and thus is able to "rein" them in...as one reins in a horse to bring it under control or slow it down.
Did I loose something? I did loosen my shoe strings...but if you mean did I lose something, then, yes I often lose things...sometimes even my temper. I rarely loose things unless I am hanging around my untethered horses.
Today I found a new one-on a university theater department web site, no less: "His tragic heroin, Blanche DuBois..." Now, she may have been on drugs...but perhaps the writer meant heroine?
How about those folks being lead around by their leads...is it not led around? I once lived in Leadville...why isn't it Ledville? How did silver get to be so cozy with lead? But I lead my dog...or, he leads me.
Do you have favorite "mis-spellchecks?"
And how about my other pet peeve - the grammar check that tells me to use an apostrophe when I am using the possessive its. It's means "it is" - Its is the possessive -- something belongs to it. And every time you add an s to a word, you do not need an apostrophe...right, grammar check?
Have you questioned any of the "grammar checks" your computer provides?
Or am I ranting for naught at an evolving language?
