I didn't know much Scarlett Johansson until this week: I don't recall ever having seen any of her work and while she is undoubtedly good looking, so are many other celebrity females. so when Mark-John asked me for an opinion on her sacking by Oxfam because of her links with Israeli company Sodastream I was at a complete loss. I've never owned a Soda Stream thingummy either.
Let's sum up the story? A worthy charity shakes its sagacious and morally superior head in disapproval at a celeb who has dared to do things for a company that works in Israeli settlements in the West Bank, no doubt expecting the celeb to freak out, issue a tear-drenched apology and promise never again to rub shoulders, or anything else, with these evil Israelis. But instead the celeb basically tells the worthy charity to get stuffed and says she will carry on working with and promoting the Israeli company.
Good for her I say. The standard knee - jerk from the British left was that Oxfam=Good therefore Johansson must equal bad. But are Oxfam in a position to appoint themselves Judge, Jury and Hangman in this case. While their publicity proclaims that they help ... (TA-TA-TAAA)
their track records suggest that the main priority for executives and managers is helping themselves to taxpayers money. And like many "charities" that recieve the bulk of their income from government, they are subject to political manipulation. It is not just Oxfam I am cynical about but the whole charity / overseas aid industry and it's poverty millionaires. Follow the link before you judge me, and remember, the main reason these charities now get their money from government and international bureaucracies is that people stopped giving when it was exposed that very little of our donations reached the people we thought we were helping.
Ever since she was signed up as the face of SodaStream, Ms Johansson has been the target of hate flak from activists who think that buying Israeli stuff, working with Israeli academics or attending Israeli theatre performances is the very worst thing a human being could ever do. You know the kind: they stand outside shops wailing and gnashing their teeth and waving placards that warn all who enter the premises, this evil company you are about to buy from sells products stained with the blood of innocents (ie, stuff made in Israel). The same idiots stage similar protests when an Israeli violinist is due to give a concert. Imagine the horror – a musician from Israel performing in England's Green and Pleasant Land? (Look up William Blake AND Dark Satanic Mills if you don't see the irony there.
The Johansson sacking came because the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions movement, which calls on politically correct Westerners to refuse to contaminate their body, souls or minds with any food, products or books from Israel, called on Oxfam to “immediately sever ties” with Ms Johansson.
Oxfam knee jerked and took exception to Johansson’s lack of guilt over advertising SodaStream, suggesting she "consider the implications”, and said it was reevaluating “Ms Johansson’s role as Oxfam global ambassador”.
And then, with stagecraft skills that upstaged Oxfam’s puffed-up pontificating, Ms Johansson’s "people" issued a statement saying: “Scarlett Johansson has respectfully decided to end her ambassador role with Oxfam after eight years.”
Game, set and match to Scarlett Johansson. And another reminder that hypocrisy is the sole virtue of the left. I will make up my own mind about what I buy and do not buy and in this I am guided by my friend Stewie Tauber whose parents returned broken hearted to Britain after retiring to a settlement in Israel. It was so horrible, they told him, they could not bear to stay. They hated what the Israelis were doing to the Palestinians but feared what Palestinians would do to Israelis if they were given half a chance. Solly and Irena you see were Ashkenazi Jews, they were not aware of the cultural diffrences between the European Jews and the North African and middle eastern Jews that now make up the majority in Israel.
