Benigno Aquino III is the current President of the Philippines. Aquino has looked a bit uncomfortable in the wake of Typhoon Haiyan, while his countrymen have gotten increasingly upset about the slow relief effort in the Haiyan zone, a messy wilderness of collapsed buildings and scattered palm trees and stinking bodies. Water is needed, and water is not there.
Be that as it may, President Aquino decided today that it was time to calm the loose talk about ten thousand dead people. Stating that this estimate may have been driven by "emotional drama", Aquino blandly asserted that deaths could have been limited to 2000 or 2500.
Wow! This massive super typhoon just rolled through, with 150 mph winds and a wall of water ten feet high, destroying every building within a kilometer of the shoreline except those of reinforced concrete. most of those building had at least one human inside- because despite the evacuation order, crime-minded Flipinos often left one adult at home to watch over the house. I was thinking that the estimate of 10,000 dead was way too low. and here comes this guy saying it is four times too high??
I am forced to conclude that the current President of the Philippines is an idiot, or perhaps more likely, a self serving politician who is grasping at straws in an effort to deflect attention from the horror unfolding across the midsection of the Philippines, and his role in the so-far unimpressive effort at rescue and relief.
