The noisy divorce mess between George and Shellie Zimmermqn has been viewed on Gather as high drama in which we are compelled to take sides. You are missing the point, people.
I decline to take sides in this divorce, because I think both marriage partners are immature and confrontational. The only lesson that I take from this is that lesson. And then I look at NRA efforts to make George Zimmerman into a poster boy for citizen gun toting, and I think, really? He's the guy you want on your poster? Because if there is going to be a guy trotting around my neighborhood with a Glock in his back pocket, I am going to want him to have the patience and compassion of a saint and the people skills of a hostage negotiator. And no, George Zimmerman, being absurdly immature and confrontational, is clearly not that guy.
But of course, if you could find a person with the patience of a saint and the people skills of a hostage negotiator, that person might be willing to serve on a neighborhood watch, but he or she is not going to be willing to carry a gun while doing it. So it ends up sort of being a circular thing that shows you the basic flaw in the very concept of citizen soldiers fighting crime with guns in their pockets.
