Here is the text of Vladimir Putin's most recent effort to defend the rule of the Assad family in Syria:
"We are not protecting the government of Syria". There's a big lie.
"no one doubts that poison gas was used in Syria. but there is every reason to believe that it was used not by the government, but by opposition forces! To provoke intervention..." That's an even bigger lie. The intelligence agencies of the USA, Germany, and France beg to differ.
"We are all different, but wHen we ask the Lord's blessing, we must not forget that we are all created equal.". Oh really? like those Russian Gays that you just turned into second class citizens with a new law?
I realize, Vladimir, that you grew up as a Soviet Citizen, working for the KGB, so you can't really abandon the idea that lies work better in foreign affairs than the truth does. You claim that you are trying to replace American unilateralism with the UN- but gee, you end up vetoing anything important in the Security council, so how is it that you are trying to breathe life into the UN? You abhor the use of force on the international stage, but you were quite willing to invade Georgia in order to make a point there. Your critique of American exceptionality is disingenuous. There have been times, yes, that America acted as if the rules did not apply to us- for example, when we looked the other way when Saddam Hussein used poison gas. But there are rare occasions, and this is one of them, when we are proposing something not because it is popular with American voters (it is not) but because it is a painful humanitarian chore that nobody else's seems willing to pick up. By the way, in the history of foreign affairs, Russia never did anything that did not benefit Russia. Your international behavior has been 100% consistent with that long tradition.
Syria is about the things you did not see fit to mention, and not the things that you did mention. And by the way, how's that President for Life thing going? Do you have a plan yet for re-writing the Russian Constitution to get yourself a fourth term?
