The 50 Shades of Grey movie is having a tough time finding its Anastasia Steele and Christian Grey. First there were reports that Garrett Hedlund turned down the role of Christian, and now it's being claimed that Amber Heard said no to playing Ana.
The couple certainly would have made a pretty pair, but many 50 Shades fans are breathing a sigh of relief right now since Amber is just way too sexy to play sweet-faced Ana. However, they're probably also wondering why Amber turned down such a life-altering opportunity. She hasn't had a starring role in a movie that's been a big hit, and this could have been her one big shot at becoming a leading lady in a blockbuster film.
As it turns out, another star who hasn't had a blockbuster recently might be partly responsible for her decision. According to the National Enquirer (via Celebitchy), Johnny Depp told Amber to turn down the lead in the 50 Shades of Grey movie. The actor allegedly said that the film is going to be "too smutty," but jealously probably played a part in his advice—surely the 50-year-old actor doesn't want his girlfriend filming tons of sex scenes with a hunky star who is almost half his age.
However, perhaps Heard didn't argue with Depp too much. She's said that she wants to be an action star, and most of the action in 50 Shades doesn't involve guns, explosions, and martial arts. The Enquirer claims that Heard wants to be the next Angelina Jolie, who has kicked butt in high-octane movies like Lara Croft: Tomb Raider, Mr. & Mrs. Smith, Wanted, and Salt. She allegedly thought that dating Johnny Depp would make this happen, but instead of helping her find exciting projects to sign on for, Depp is just holding her back. So Heard is reportedly getting bored and unhappy.
If there really is trouble in paradise for this pretty pair, Amber might later regret turning down the role of Ana in 50 Shades. But it's also possible that ditching Johnny will actually help her land more of the action-packed roles that she's looking for.
Hers is a precautionary tale for other young actresses who are looking to land A-list men: Dating them won't necessarily help your career.
