A report from NBA.com on July 13 has recapped the first day of summer league action from Las Vegas, Nevada. Among the major stars on day one of the competition were Austin Rivers of the New Orleans Pelicans. He scored 24 points along with seven rebounds and six assists to help lead his team to the win 77-72 over the New York Knicks. The Pelicans will look to improve upon last year's success now that they've added in Jrue Holiday and Tyreke Evans to the roster. Rivers will obviously be competing for playing time, and will probably be backing up Holiday.
The basement-dwelling Charlotte Bobcats have also added some new pieces to their puzzle including their top draft pick Cody Zeller and their recent free agent signee, Al Jefferson. Zeller had limited productivity, while Charlotte came up short in a 69-68 loss on day one to the Spurs. However, young player Jeffrey Taylor scored 24 points, while Bismack Biyombo yanked down 10 rebounds for the team. Also scoring 24 points for the first day of competition was John Jenkins of the Atlanta Hawks, who suffered a 90-83 loss to the Clippers.
Games will be played on Saturday at both the Thomas & Mack Center and the Cox Pavillion in Vegas. WatchESPN/ESPN3 will live stream games including the Portland Trailblazers vs. Phoenix Suns at 8:30 p.m. EDT and the Raptors vs. Heat at 10:30 p.m. EDT. Also, NBA TV will televise multiple games over the course of the day, and there is a live stream package available here for subscribers to watch summer league games online.
In action Saturday will be two of the recent draft picks, with Otto Porter, the #3 overall pick debuting for the Wizards against the Warriors, and Ben McLemore, the #7 overall pick, debuting for the Kings against the Mavs. It should be interesting to see how these guys start out early on, even though they aren't facing some of the top talent in the league, just yet.
