Witherspoon is a spoiled A-list actress, obviously, and the temptation to pull rank in a situation like that must be quite strong — nobody wants to see their mate handcuffed and put in the slammer for DUI, rich or poor.
But her efforts at cop-mocking during a sobriety test (which her husband dismally failed), disobeying orders to remain in the car (at least twice), and mouthing off about one's fame and the dire consequences the patrolman will endure if he fails to recognize who she is (evidently he didn't) is a definite no no.
The couple's meekish mugshots above show the results of Ms. Witherspoon's misguided approach: Both she and her husband were arrested. Him for driving while under the influence; her for disorderly conduct.
"You're about to be on national news"
Well, that was a major understatement on the arrestee's part. In fact, Witherspoon's inebriated misconduct and her less than arresting bad attitude has made the international news by today.
That's to be expected, naturally, since the American movie star's fan base is not merely limited to her homeland but extends to millions upon millions of admirers all over the world. Thus, the humiliated expression she wears in her police photo has now become a not-so-stellar addition to an otherwise fairly admirable career.
Notable, too, is that her signature blonde hair is not a bit blonde in this most recent glamorous headshot. It's an unremarkable brown, a color change which no doubt *threw* the police officer and contributed to his inability to become starstruck by the cinematic giant.
Good. A vehicle operated drunkenly is like a loaded firearm in the hands of a toddler. It can kill people. So no exceptions should ever be made for fame and notoriety. Yes, now and then, as with trainwreck Lindsay Lohan's never ending petty crime spree, favortism does sadly occur, but, in the Reese Witherspoon arrest, justice was swift and as required by law completely blind in its delivery.
One less drunk driver on the roads; one more icon exposed for being full of herself.
Lessons for famous belligerents, the tipsy, and the innocent during a police stop:
1. Courteous behavior is a plus. Insolence a real negative;
2. Remain in your vehicle unless ordered to step outside of it, and keep your hands visible at all times and to yourself;
3. Do not undertake to hinder an investigation in progress by interfering with it in any way, including issuing false or misleading statements;
4. Do not attempt to distract an officer from his or her duties by calling them names, questioning their authority needlessly, or flaunting celebrity status in their face.
For everyone in general, whenever summoned to pull over by police always choose a well lit area where there are potential witnesses around. If ordered to do so in a remote section of highway, slow your car down and turn on the hazard flasher. This will indicate compliance on your part as you then proceed to the nearest populated location where you can feel secure while being questioned. Thereafter, if it is determined you are to be taken into custody, do not resist.
And remember, always wear your seatbelt and drive safely!
