Coupled with lingering rumors concerning a 20-year-old Saudi national "suspect" purportedly being interrogated while under treatment in a Boston hospital for burns, the riddle of the nation's second largest "terrorist attack" in history has only further deepened since yesterday.
During the night, the death toll has risen to just three victims, one an eight-year-old boy, although the number of those injured in the explosions seems to steadily increase by the hour: Nearly 150 people are currently being hospitalized for wounds ranging from ruptured eardrums to missing limbs.
Which brings the question of this terrorist act actually being an act of terrorism...
With the vast majority of injured attendees in yesterday's annual race suffering traumatic leg injuries or the loss of their extremities, and a large percent of those victims being runners, it simply doesn't fit the standard motif of any known terrorist group.
Instant death and high numbers of fatalities are the main objective in these mass assaults usually, and strategically planting IEDs [improvised explosive devices] along a roadside or well-used path is intended to take out as many soft targets as possible. Not merely rip off the feet and legs of athletes.
So too the mystery man on roof doesn't really appear to be a man at all, but rather a youth taking long strides as he's quickly exiting the scene.
Still, it's a curious snapshot, of course, since whoever the individual is he's acting totally disinterested in the out-of-the-ordinary and extremely gruesome spectacle taking place just below him on the street.
The fact that, amid all this cinematic-like mayhem and chaos, he doesn't even pause for a second to rubberneck is rather suspicious.
Those images of an unidentified male roof-hopping, if real, and the low-lying nature of all the bomb blasts may suggest a homespun type of motive and malice, similar to the mass shooting events that seem so prevalent of late.
But a politically inspired crime of 9/11 proportions that was hatched overseas by self-declared and well known enemies of America which only aims to horrifically maim instead of outright kill...?
No, not likely.
