Despite Colorado Theater shooter, James Holmes, gunning down dozens of people he'd never met before and with whom he had no grievance, identifying himself as "the Joker" when apprehended, booby-trapping his apartment to explode into a massive firebomb, and then attempting suicide in custody by repeatedly bashing his head against a jail cell wallÂ…there are still lingering doubts as to whether or not this dangerous weirdo is really off his gourd.
So a court has ordered that the defendant submit to a battery of psychological testing which will not only include polygraph examinations but an age-old method for extracting the truth, and nothing but the truth, out of him: A narcoanalytic "truth serum" which will "reduce his inhibitions" and once and for all dispose of the issue.
This was done in anticipation of Holmes pleading not guilty by reason of insanity today, and over the numerous objections of his attorneys who've claimed that forcing their client to take narcotics and to otherwise disclose his mental history was "a violation of his right to privacy."
Court documents reveal the 25-year-old has had to be removed from prison and placed in a psych ward at least twice since being incarcerated last year because "he was in immediate need of psychiatric evaluation" and other related medical assistance. One of these bizarre events in fact was so debilitating it caused him to miss a scheduled court hearing.
Regardless, even if the Colorado Theater Shooter is offering an insanity plea in his defense now, the failed student of neuroscience could still be sentenced to death under Colorado law if he's found to have been lucid during the preplanning and execution stages of the massacre and is convicted.
The flame-haired Holmes killed 12 and injured 70 others who were attending the premier showing of the Dark Knight Rises at a cinema complex in Aurora Colorado on July 20th 2012. It's the largest mass shooting in American history.
