March, 3, 2013 was a very sad day for the O'Neill family. Their 12-year-old boy, Bailey, was taken off life support after being punched in the face two months ago. The bullied boy was being harassed by two other boys in the schoolyard on Jan. 10, and one of the boys allegedly punched him in the face, causing a concussion. Bailey started having seizures shortly after the incident and was rushed to the hospital where he was put in a medically induced coma.
No charges were filed against the two boys who bullied Bailey in the schoolyard that day. However, an autopsy is being performed and there is video footage of the incident that officials are looking into right now. "Our school community is deeply saddened by this loss. Our condolences are with Bailey's family and friends during this very difficult time," Superintendent Stephen Butz said in a statement.
This is just another case where bullying was taken too far. Bailey's classmate might have not intended to punch him so hard that it killed him, but it was still an unacceptable act. It is extremely worrying that kids that young can be so cruel to one another. While it's important for school officials to start taking bullying more seriously, parents also need to teach their children to be kinder to others. Bullying is a serious problem in schools today, and the problem will only get worse if people don't step up to help.
