CPAC is on tap. In case you need to know, CPAC is an acronym for "Conservative Policy Action Conference." This is where the right wing goes to have fun. In past years, they often politicized on who would be the next Republican Presidential candidate. This is not one of those happy times. This year, the gathering is already marred in advance by the absence of Chris Christie, who was judged not conservative enough by the Powers That Be in the conservative wing of the Republican Party. Congressman Peter King, a moderate Republican from New York State, marveled at the suicidal nature of this choice on the part of the CPAC folk, but really they do not care. They seem to have the odd idea that they are the people most beloved by the American people, and that Chris Christie, with his 70% approval rating, is yesterday's warmed over leftovers.
So- who is going to speak at CPAC? Gingrich? Palin? DeMint? None of those people actually have a job in politics, so they are free to say whatever crazy thing pops into their minds. Expect to hear a lot about how wonderful the Sequester is. Expect to hear a lot about how we can finally put an end to gay marriage. Ted Cruz will of course be there. he has sort of taken De Mint's place as the Tea Party bomb thrower, the knee jerk guy who tries to shoot down any Obama appointment by whatever tool he can invent.
Is the Republican Party really interested in any soul searching, or is that all cosmetic? well, as far as CPAC is concerned, it is entirely a matter of cosmetics. if you want to see any soul searching, change the channel. There is another wing of the Republicans who in the wake of the 2012 election want to talk about policy as well as how to look pretty and sound friendly. Unfortunately, those guys are in the minority now and do not want the visibility of a conference, because they know they will be termed RINOs, Republicans-In-Name-Only.
