Mayor Bloomberg of New York City is being petitioned by animal rights activists for making neutering for mandatory for large dogs and also for enforcing fines for breeding. The online petition by M Cavanagh of Brooklyn, NY, raeds:
Everyday, the NYCACC (the city shelter) kills on average 20 dogs for lack of adopters. This is backwards population control. Large dogs are not suited for city living and are rampantly dumped in the shelters because people do not have the means, facilities, or experience to care for them. Many pit bulls are bred and their puppies sold to make fast money, and too often the mothers are dumped when their purpose has been fulfilled. Pitbulls are a "status" dog by some, and people buy these cute puppies but end up dumping or abandoning them because they can't take care of them. Currently, there is no regulation over these large animals. NYC is not farmland, and dogs are not livestock. We need immediate MANDATORY neuter laws (with hefty fines for noncompliance) and costly licenses (less for rescues) to prevent exploitation of these animals and to ensure that only those with sufficient resources can acquire these animals.
Please help stop killing of animals by preventing their overbreeding. Sign the petition online by clicking here.
