You must never worry about the moon.
Shut your eyes when you see it
Or blot it out with your hand,
But never gaze for long
Into its twinkling sodium glow.
Your eye cannot translate its light
And you should never try.
Every book will burn in its glare,
Every poem will drown in its milk
And you will never find
The cool dark where a tongue can sleep.
If you stay awake with the moon
Until its glitter falls down the slate
And sinks ahead of the rising sun
The shadow you leave on the dawn
Will hide the true work of life
And rob you of your love.
