Unfortunately, the Republican party has handed over control to the tea party extremists. The tea party is a product of the Koch brothers, who began setting it up back in 2002 and then took advantage of the outpouring of bigotry and hatred of Obama being elected to formalize the tea party in 2009.

The sole goal of the tea party is to protect the rich - ensuring their tax breaks and loopholes continue to allow the rich to avoid paying taxes. Part of this is expanding the externalization of costs from the corporations to the taxpayers. Which is why time after time the tea party has held the American public hostage solely for the benefit of the few rich people.

Rich people like the billionaire Koch brothers who have been funding the climate denialism industry, funding the tea party, and funding Republican politicians.

Bottom line: The Republican party itself isn't crazy; it has just given itself over completely to the plutocrats and reality-deniers. If the former-GOP wants to become the once-again-GOP, then any honest members left in the GOP have to stand up for honesty, integrity, and responsibility. So far, they have chosen to devolve into the other direction.
