So very true, but I am not one who is pleased. I have never been a proponent of a one party system. "The people" are never willing to expend enough interest in government to control a one party system. From an historical point of view, the must be at least two functioning parties. The problem today is that one party, the Republicans, isn't functioning to make the system work. It is actually functioning to make the system dis-functional.

No. Let the Dems divide among, or run Dem/Lib tickets. If the rethug party is self-demolishing, then (guarantee) a third party will step up. Who knows it might be #OWS to take the most liberal stances, and the Dems will become the responsible/respectable conservatives. Whatcha think?

I dunno. As far as I'm concerned, the Dem's are already GOP Light, thanks to Slick Willie Clinton, & Obama following in his footsteps. How about Bernie Sanders leading a 3rd Party movement with OWS support? Fat chance, I suppose.....

I agree with you, and it hurts to watch. As for Bernie Sanders? Yes. Hell yes. Maybe with Barnie Frank as VP? Can you imagine a ticket with Bernie and Barnie? They'd damn well get my vote. Wonder if we could get it done. We don't have much time before they want to retire. They've both already said they want out. We'd have to give them a house and senate they can work with. Our failure after obama, was to sit back in 2010, thinking we could relax some.

And that's just it, you old codgers! I include myself. There has to be YOUNG leadership! Bernie and Barney wont last forever. Think the younger generation is up to it? Well, I guess some of us may live to see if it happens.

I agree with George, but I think Blow overstates the split in the Republican Party, and I think Democrats are in grave danger of losing the Senate and remaining in the minority in the House in 2014. That means Obama had better get cracking with whatever he plans to accomplish in the next four years. A lame duck President with the opposing party holding both houses in Congress ain't gonna do ANYTHING...except maybe keep his veto pen working.

It will be at least until 2016 before the Dem's have a chance of regaining the House due to the 2010 GOP gerrymandered landslide. Agree on the Senate. Too mant Dem seats up for grabs. All we have to look forward to is more gridlock lurching from crisis to crisis.....

While national news focuses on weather conditions in the northeast, or drought conditions in the midwest, and totally does not cover the real news of conditions in our own parliment. 3 major companies own the networks. We need to jumpstart that--and get it fixed. I'm tired of "Roe v Wade war" conversations being held while our country folds on important topics like jobs, how congress voted, and oh, yah. Jobs.

Yeah, I am not optimistic at all. I just read this morning in the LA Times that Republicans are going to stonewall on the debt limit and force sequestration. That will be disastrous for the economy and for a lot of low income people, but they don't care about that. They are only concerned about defense spending cuts, and you can expect a blizzard of Republican statements about how the security of the country is threatened, and we must not cut defense...while demanding cuts in all social programs....including Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security, Head Start, infrastructure repair...and anything else that helps the people.
And of course no tax increases or loophole closures for the rich and powerful.

Right. Obama and the Congressional Dems have folded every time.
I thought maybe the election would help them develop a little backbone, but according to the Times article I referenced above, a lot of them are running scared. Quite a few...I don't remember the number...are in states that went heavily to Romney. There is a very good chance that Obama will have a hostile Congress...even more hostile than the present one...in two years.
