50 Shades of Grey movie casting watchers prepare to be shocked—Ian Somerhalder and Matt Bomer are getting beat in a new Christian Grey poll. So why is Gossip Girl actor Ed Westwick defeating these fan favorites?
The last poll was created by Wetpaint and includes a
long list of TV stars that could make the consummate Christian. The competition is tough since so many of the guys on the list are the complete package—the poll also includes True Blood hottie Alexander Skarsgard, The Tudors hunk Henry Cavill, and sexy Supernatural actor Jensen Ackles. Like Matt and Ian, these three actors also have fans campaigning for them to play Christian Grey.
Perhaps Ed Westwick is beating all these babes now because he simply hasn't been included in previous fan polls. Anytime a Gossip Girl star is mentioned in connection with the 50 Shades of Grey movie, it's always Ed's equally-attractive costar Chace Crawford. If Ed had appeared in every fan poll before now, who knows? Maybe Fifty fans would be talking about him instead of Ian Somerhalder and Matt Bomer.
Of course it's possible that the Wetpaint poll is just an anomaly or that it hasn't gotten enough votes to accurately gauge what Fifty fans really want. It's also possible that Gossip Girl fans took over the poll and are voting for Ed because they miss their weekly dose of bad boy Chuck Bass so much. Right now Ed is winning the poll with over 60 percent of the votes cast, and The Vampire Diaries star Paul Wesley is in second place at 17 percent. Unfortunately the poll didn't include Arrow actor Stephen Amell.
Ed is 25 years old, so he'd be the perfect age to play Christian Grey when the movie starts filming, and he doesn't have a lot on his plate right now. Ed's fans will be happy that he's starring in the Romeo & Juliet movie, in which he plays Romeo's rival Tybalt. Younger stars Douglas Booth and Hailee Steinfeld were cast as the titular star-crossed lovers.
