I am a huge fan of Gotye. He is so talented. My favorite song of all time is "Somebody That I Used To Know" It has haunting melodic music and genius lyrics. I am so inspired by the video. It is just amazing. It must have taken a very long time to make the video.
Gotye loves to make unique videos and has unique sounding instruments. It is very cool to see an artist who beats to his own drum. Gotye's real name is Wouter De Backer. Gotye's 2011 single "Somebody That I Used to Know" reached Number 1 on the Billboard Hot 100.
Some interesting facts about Gotye is he has a recording studio in his parents barn. The painting in the video is based off of one of his father's paintings. Gotye worked on the song and became stuck at 2 minutes long. He realized he needed a woman's perspective. He wrote the woman's part and put the song away until he could find a woman to sing it. He also stated that it is not based on any woman in particular.
He needed a woman to sing the woman's part. It took him years to find Kimbra. He knew that it would be a good fit. Kimbra has an amazing voice. I think she really does the song justice. I love the video. When Kimbra comes on and starts singing. Gotye looks so hurt by Kimbra's words she is singing to him. He looks down and away. He looks devastated. I wonder sometimes if he is still in love with the girl he is singing about.
I have watched live recordings of Gotye and Kimbra singing the song. They are amazing live. In my opinion that shows true talent. They are really singing. I love it because every version is a little different. One of my favorites is when Gotye is actually playing some sort of keyboard while Kimbra is singing her part.
This song truly makes me feel something amazing. I think one reason it is so popular is pretty much everyone has had their heart stomped on by someone in the past. So you can relate to both of their pain and anguish. When I listen it sounds like Gotye is still longing for the girl and still cares for her even though he says he does not.
Please check out the video on Gotye's channel on Youtube.

Then I looked up the original song and some of Gotye's other videos. He's quite a creative fellow, for sure. My granddaughter loves to watch his videos on youtube when she's here.
LOVE IT!
Thanks for writing this Wanda, because I would have never known his name. Just loved that song so much ~ and I'd hear it on the Radio all the time and wished I knew who it was.
