What could be the driving force that motivates otherwise fare minded Americans to want to own guns that fire hundreds of rounds a minute. Is it patriotism, stupidity. fear, selfishness, self-defense or is there another more sinister reason for their intransigence.

There are not weapons used in a crime since the 30's (Capone and his Tommy Guns)that will fire hundreds of rounds in a minute.
Not sure where you got your information, but automatic weapons are already illegal - and are NOT obtainable by the general public.
Even in military weapons - "Hundreds of rounds a minute" is a real problem, because the barrell is so hot by the time a single 100 rounds are fired that there is a problem.
