How much is your weed worth to you? Many parents enjoy the sticky-icky, but for 32-year-old Dalawna Berran-Lett, the cost was very high. Upon discovering that her 15-year-old daughter snatched her bag out of her purse on January 4, Dalawna thought it appropriate to leave her twin 3-year-old sons, Ky'heir and Dy'heir Arthur, home alone while she searched for the girl. While she was gone, the boys apparently tried to cook food, causing the house to catch fire.
This "mother" was charged Tuesday with involuntary manslaughter and endangering the welfare of a child. No shocker there. What is shocking, though, is that this is not the first time the boys had caused this kind of destruction when she left them home alone. Just a few weeks before their death, she had left them home watching TV, while she went to buy rolling papers to smoke marijuana. When she returned, after 20-30 minutes, the house was full of smoke, caused by a rack of ribs that the boys had put on top of the stove and turned the burner on, trying to cook them. This time, she wasn't so lucky, losing both of her sons, and probably at least a couple of years in prison.
There are so many things wrong with this, where does one even begin? First, 3-year-olds should never, ever, ever be left home by themselves. Like, ever. Smart, responsible parents know better than that. Secondly, this woman makes all pot-smoking mommies look bad. Not once, but twice, she left her young children, clearly not able to care for themselves, home alone, to do as they pleased. Not every parent that enjoys a toke now and again is a moron, like Dalawna Berran-Lett. However, it seems more than likely that they probably weren't receiving the best supervision when she was there. Hopefully, she is punished to the full extent for this. Had she been the parent these boys deserved, they would still be alive.
