It's short for 'The United States of America', Thomas, sometimes it's shortened to the United States, or U.S., it's a long name . .

John: The representatives at the United Nations General Assembly are seated in alphabetical order of the name of the country they represent. The United States representative is seated after the United Kingdom, not in the "A" section. "United States" is the short form for "United States of America".

John: Yes, it does. I agree. What I object to is not the adjective used to name the citizens but the name used for the country. I go by the name used at the United Nations and in atlases. When referring to the armed forces we always say United States Navy, never American Navy. Or United States Embassy, never American Embassy. Let's be consistent.

America the Beautiful, God shed his grace on thee!.... Hey, I like to be in America!... besides, regardless of whatever atlas one looks to, I dont think that there is any other country that has the word 'America' in its official name.

Of course all I can confirm is that Ontario is entirely too accurate... much though I hat that "centre of the... universe" thing. And "centre" is even spelled correctly...! :-)

It is funny! If you look at Google Maps, you'll see the same outlines to represent the provinces. British Columbia on the left (hippies, old people) then Alberta (oil oil cowboys) Manitoba and then Saskatchean, then Ontraio (Centre ofthe Universse in its mind) and then Quebec - Poutine etc. and then Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and PEI where people talk really funny. They do: Nice bike is NOYCE BOYKE.

It was a few years ago - Maybe you said Pointe Claire.

My sister lives in PC. either you or Rory mentioned the PC school system years ago. I lived in Westmount and went to WHS, then Dawson Selby - first year it opened and then McGill and Montreal Gazette and then to Toronto - Globe and Mail and then Boston.

What confuses me is that I see PEI - people who talk really funny, but it seems as if NS and NB are one.

And why is NL called New Ireland? Is it Irish?

Thought CN was mostly Scotty, aye, though I know Montreal has some Irish pubs, but every Anglo I know in PQ are Scots.
