I have this really great manager who has these little touchbase meetings with all the employees. They're one on one meetings scheduled once a month or so. The purpose is to talk about your job, things you're doing, things you need help with, etc.
I have one of these meetings on Friday and I would like to say something about something that is bothering me. I process a payroll for about 3,000 people. My co-worker processes for around 1,200 people. The person whom she replaced used to help me with a lot of things because they process for so many less people. When I ask this one for help, she refuses. Then she said she was bored, I told her that I had lots of work to do that she could help with. She said, no thanks, I'm not that kind of bored, I'm bored of the work. So she went to our manager and told her that she's "bored". Now I have no help, when I've always had help before, and she's getting extra projects to work on. I don't have time to work on extra projects because I'm so busy doing double the work she does and it drives me crazy. Does she honestly think that I'm not bored?? Of course I'm bored and would like something else to do!!!!
She is really kind of struggling with one of the projects and now she told our manager that she wants me to learn how to do it too. Because she's constantly asking me questions!!! But not when anyone else is around of course.
I feel like I'm being completely walked all over. Do I say anything to my manager or do I totally sound like a whiner? I'm afraid that's the way it's going to come out so should I just keep my mouth shut?

What ashame decent, ethical workers such as yourself always seem to get screwed by others who care less and do less.
One time I started a new job, and I started learning new things, and got more responsibilities than my coworker, although I didn't know it. She approached me very upset and asked why I was getting special treatment. I told her all I had done was asked my boss.
So I don't know the answer, but it never hurts to ask if you handle it right.
unfortuaately, that is the reality of the situation......there are always those who work hard, and there are always slackers, and there are always managers who allow the slackers do get by (ifthe manger gave a hoot, then the slackers would b working, or get fired)
good luck job-hunting!

The manager is not a good manager. He or she may be a good person, but manager is not.
First of all, even when using computerized payroll, having a person doing 3000 cases in a forty hours week is insanity. The manager takes a very big risk. You may handle the job, because you may have different qualities, however what happens if you get sick for two weeks, or so, or if you go on vacation? How many people in the company can substitute for you?
On the other hand, the other person should have not been hired for the job, or if she were hired, she should have been removed from that position shortly after.
You know, most of us don't look at clerical jobs as having something to do in common with assembly line jobs, but they do. They are repetitive jobs, which tend to be boring, even if it is not putting in a few screws for eight hours a day.
There are people who are very good at doing it, they are others who can't.
I got news for you, assembly line work is totally "against nature", and believe it or not, very few people can do it.
Book keeping is not a very imaginative job. It takes a talent to work with figures, and mostly to be accurate.
Unfortunately, especially these days when we have computers, bad managers assume that every one is cut for processing payroll.
I don't mean to say that the person is a total waste, all I am saying that the one who is a totally total waste is the manager who did not see the reality in front of him/her...
I hope you have the guts to let the manager know about these facts. If necessary you may even ask to talk to a higher echelon in your organizational chart, because after all, you may be at the losing end, but what is really sad is that actually the organization is losing because the manager is missing the skills to manage!
I can give you an opinion on the situation, I can't tell you how to break the news to the manager though... I am not good in diplomacy, I just see things that don't go right!
