My First Short Story

In the fourth grade I wrote a love note. It became my first short story:
 
"I love Karen. She is my best girl friend. She spends time listening to me and answers my questions very well.  She is Catholic. I do not know what that means but I do not think it is anything wrong or bad.
 
Last week, she taught me how to talk with God. I already knew how to pray. But she taught me how to really talk to God. I did not know that I could talk to God like I talk to her. 
 
My dad got orders for OK last week. We leave in Feburary. I hope that I never forget Karen. If you see her, tell her I love her until forever."
 
I shared that note with my best friend James. He thought it was "mushy."  Then I shared it with Karen's friend Camille. She thought I should "add some sex in it, like "I want to kiss your face all over" and "I want to hold you like I hold my teddy bear, so tight and between my legs" " (okay, first, I don't *own* a teddy or any other kind of bear; and second, I think that Cami has seen too many movies, if you know what I mean!) 
 
So while my first attempt at writing was not an overwhelming success, when I gave it to Karen to read before I left school, she cried and raised her hands toward me, gave me a big hug and said "I love you too!"  In my eyes, then as now, decades later, that was all of the "review" I needed to see, hear and experience.
