Some of you may recall my last post about a starving dog that made her way to our home.
Since then, we have called or left emails for the Animal Defense League, the police(who need a warrant before they can take an animal from it's owner), Animal Care Services, Responsible Pet Owners Alliance, The Humane Society, and our local animal shelter.
Most of these organizations told me that because we don't live within the city limits, they couldn't help me. Red tape is more like it. The most outrageous reply was from Responsible Pet Owners. This lady had the nerve to imply that we stop feeding the dog! Why? Because if animal control sees food out, then, the dog isn't starving. What? She warned me about going and speaking to the owners because of a possible argument. I don't care if the whole neighborhood gets angry! The hungry dog is what is important. Lastly, I told her that if that dog ever gets loose again, the owners aren't getting her back. She told me that I could be charged with having stolen property. Hey, she isn't stolen if she is intelligent enough to figure a way to get away from people who don't care about her! Dogs have free will, too.
So, here is where we find ourselves. Our local shelter is filled to the rim with animals, eventhough, they said they would send someone out for the dog. They, also, told me that they would call me and it's been over a week. Our plan is to keep throwing small bags of food to her, every morning. Like Sef told me, "A little food is better than nothing, at all!" I agree with him.

But, the law is crazy that way. It is true, that since you are not the owner of the dog, you can't keep it or else you could be charged with theft.
The only thing you can do is what you have been doing.
Even if you have to go the newspapers and tell your story to get attention, I would do it.
Perhaps a local news station will help, I too live outside the city limits and therefore when I see a dog that is suffering all I can do is call the sheriff, then they decide whether or not to help the beast. Too often they just shoot the poor thing so needless to say its best to keep to myself. The EP Animal Control won't go beyond the city limits anymore so if someone dumps their pup we get stuck with em.
