I do not yet understand the nuances, if there are any, to the Republican objections about Hagel, and I am ready to assume that President Obama thinks that making them spell their objections out publicly during confirmation hearings will be a useful exercise.
The Dem Senators have maybe 45 votes for Hagel, and 10 against. If the Republicans will come up with at least 6 votes out of their 45 members, Hagel is in. It is strange that so few Republicans are willing to vote for someone they served with- but Republicans have been stampeding to the Right in recent years. Reagan would be way too liberal for them today on a number of issues.
