On Friday afternoon, the unnamed woman was at home with her kids when somebody began ringing her doorbell. She assumed it was a door-to-door salesman and ignored it. Certainly nothing wrong with that. What happened next is a nightmare no mother or father ever wants to deal with. The person must have assumed nobody was home and decided to break in. When the mother realized what was happening, she grabbed her children and her .38 revolver and headed for a crawlspace in the attic.
After the man, Paul Ali Slater, searched the entire home, he discovered the hiding family. Thankfully, the mother was ready and was not willing to take a wait and see kind of approach. She emptied her revolver and managed to hit Slater five times in the face and neck area. According to Walton County Sheriff Joe Chapman, she warned him not to move or she would shoot him again. After she fled the home, Slater managed to make it back to his vehicle. He was arrested near the home and taken to the hospital where he is expected to be just fine. She could not have known what his intentions were, and no mother would be willing to risk their children's lives. In the days following the shooting, Slater's criminal record has been revealed. He is no stranger to breaking the law. He was released from jail in August 2012 for a simple battery charge.
This Georgia mom did what she needed to do to protect her kids, which included using her gun. Imagine if she would not have had anything to defend herself with. What would have happened? Although gun opponents have some very strong, valid points, it is important to look at the other side of the gun situation. There are bad people in this country, and police cannot be everywhere at once.

FIVE times and he's going to make it?
Dirty Harry is weeping.
Fine Woman.
...Or even anywhere...
The woman was fortunate that she had the gun to protect herself and her children.
Let's face it, People; the Police are not to Protect (usually), but to report and "investigate" committed Crimes after-the-fact. If anyone can relay a story of how the Police saved them from a Crime being committed against their person, I'd like to hear it...they are a rarity.
This Woman was fortunate and Wise to have a Gun...and a fine one at that, that she chose to use it.
A home invasion is another thing. If someone clears whatever needs to be cleared for owning a gun, that is a resident's choice then. I will say - we have a station two blocks away - and if the police are called due to a break-in they are very quick in getting here. I've noticed in our surrounding area there are very very few break=ins as a result - those who know where the station is located go to another neighborhood. Plus, there's all sorts of Hopkins security floating around as we are right by the campus.
Precisely the point, jeanne. That is because Cops carry Guns. Guns are an excellent deterrent...whether you are a Policeman, or a Law-abiding Citizen.
What is the main purpose of the Gun for Policemen?
A. To shoot Criminals and put out streetlights
B. To PROTECT THEMSELVES
No, Miss Dodgy...sounds more like something from the old wild Left. ;]
If you were an auto, you'd be "Miss Sparky"...always looking for a place to plug in.
