Cakes for a Cause

Tomorrow, there is a special fundraiser in our community.  One of our neighbors is in need of a heart transplant and we're all pitching in to help with expenses and have a good time.  The event features a spaghetti dinner, silent auction, bake sale and 50-50 raffles.


I'm helping with the Bake Sale, so I've baked a couple of cakes.  My baking supplies are sadly depleted from baking so many dozens of Christmas cookies, so I had to work with what was on hand.


Since the fundraiser is for a heart transplant, I used my heart shaped cake pans to make a cream-filled chocolate layer cake:

 

 

In the spirit of the party, I made a festive party cake, using bits and pieces left from the cookie decorating.  I think it turned out well:

 

On a personal note, I felt a sense of victory from being able to squeeze the frosting bags.  While it's not my best work, only six months ago I was unable to use my left hand at all!  Please keep Fred in your prayers.  Miracles do happen!

Wow, what a very neat thing to do.........I just love fundraisers like that and always like to participate whenever I can.........wow, your cakes are absolutely beautiful, Jan!. I think they'll go quickly. There are only four cakes. The rest is cookies and brownies, bars, etc.

True, Sonia. When we lived in an upscale suburb, I collected for the American Heart Association each year. Most of the donations came from the retirees; those who could least afford it.

UPDATE: After supper, I went to buy raffle tickets and my husband went to the bake sale tables. He bought my party cake! I asked why and he said he knew it would be good! I could have just made a cash donation, but it was kind of fun the way it worked out.

Do you make your cakes from scratch? I've tried over the years, but often they are too heavy versus a boxed cake mix.

Use cake flour. It makes ALL the difference.

I will, Debbie. I have not yet heard how much money was raised, but am optimistic because of the size of the crowd. It's especially touching because this area is overall quite low income.
