Exploding Glass

I was just reading on yahoo about the Shark Tank Bursts at Mall by ABC News.  I was wondering if the tank was made from the new formula for making glass baking dishes. You see there are a lot of lawsuits about new glass baking dishes exploding and injuring people. The companies are saying that people are not following directions and that is the reason they are exploding.

Consumer Reports has a 5 page spread on exploding baking dishes. I googled it and there are so many reports of exploding glass bakeware. What is your opinion??

we have had a pyrex pan explode before. you have to use hot mitts, place them on hot mits, and never on a cold surface or if it is cold not on a hot surface. Very tempermental

It would seem to me that with the kind of technology that is available, there shouldn't be exploding glass dishes! I haven't bought any new glass dishes lately, but I would definitely check Consumer Reports before I did!

I've used Pyrex for years and have never thought about any risks associated with it. The only Pyrex dish I ever lost was when some twit dropped a pie plate onto a gravel surface.

However, that said, I have been leaning more toward adding cast iron bakeware to my kitchen. Cast iron can last 100 years, so it is a better investment than something like Pyrex.

Thanks for the tip, Heather. Cast iron also adds needed iron to your food so it's a win-win all around. I hadn't thought of cast iron for bakeware, though. Now I will. ;-) Thanks again.

Oh wow, I hadn't heard about either incident. Both are scary. I don't bake much since i'm by myself and when i do, I use metal pans

I had a pyrex explode on me once. Was just sitting there on the counter we were all in another room and it just exploded, was recently taken out of the oven.

I have never had any problems with my pyrex but Heather makes a valid suggestion so I'm thinking I'll start looking for more cast iron dishes. They are heavier but I think it worth the weight to have the benefits.

I've had Pyrex bake ware explode before.. remember when blue and purple and clear Pyrex bakeware were popular like 10 years ago? I the purple/burgundy set... I had a pie plate crack and a small square baking dish explode when my friend sat it on the cool tile counter top after taking the brownies out of the oven. I threw the rest of my set away that day.

I hadn't heard about this so my first reaction was to think that being eaten by sharks is not what I think of happening at the mall. I went to Swagbucks to check out and watched the video. No one was even close to the glass. It wasn't even a crack, then breaking, it was explosive. So strange.

I've never had a baking dish explode on me, not yet anyway. I did some snooping around and found a possible reason though. Bake ware is not made from the same type of glass it was some years ago. Pyrex for example used to be made from Borosilicate, but is now soda lime glass that is not as good for heat expansion etc. The newer soda lime is cheaper, causes less waste in manufacturing, but another driver is also meeting environmental/air quality standards from the blast furnaces that melt the glass from my reading. I suppose that is why most companies moved away from it.
I guess if you want the better(?) bake ware, shop in some antique stores for the older Pyrex type dishes. I've seen it in some antique stores and always wish I had the money for it... now I know why, LOL!

When I was younger (early 20's) I had a large pyrex pan bust when I put it in the dishwater before it was cooled down enough. That is my only experience.

I had a pyrex dish that exploded on me. It blew hot wing sauce all over! I could've been seriously hurt!

That is very scary. Obviously the factories are trying to cut costs and lessen the quality. All of my glass bake ware is really old, I think I have had them all since I got married 23 years ago. So I assume they were made better back then.
