The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame has announced the inductees for 2013. It is good to see that Heart, Rush, Randy Newman, Donna Summer, and Albert King made it.
Public Enemy made it, too, according to The Washington Post. They deserve it, but it is hard to see how they deserved it more than some of the other nominees, such as The Marvelettes and Joan Jett and The Blackhearts. In the recent history of music, have Public Enemy really had more impact? The Paul Butterfield Blues Band, The Meters, and Procol Harum also did not make the cut this year.
What are the criteria here? No one seems to know. It seems that it might be fairer to choose between nominees by picking those who have been around the longest. It is hard to believe that The Marvelettes and The Meters are not already in the Hall of Fame. They were right there early in the birth of rock and roll, and they played a major part in helping formulate the sound. Joan Jett is one of the few women and was one of the first to head a group. Perhaps the Hall of Fame felt since they were honoring Heart, they had covered women in rock.
At any rate, congratulations to all the new inductees. Maybe Joan Jett and the others will make the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame next year!
