We are deeply in debt from twelve years of two unfunded wars. Our troops have already fought for too long. Way too many of them are committing suicide. If we are going to engage in another war or wars, we really need to bring back the draft so our current troops have time to recover mentally and physically. Obviously those who are pushing so hard to go to war aren't going to step up and volunteer to go themselves.

Spot on, Susan. I've been saying for years that the military draft should be reinstated. (Maybe with an option for public service.) If we still had the draft today, there's no way we would have been in Afghanistan for over 10 years in an unwinnable war.

I actually liked the all volunteer force concept but it isn't playing out too well in these days of perpetual war. So many people are too quick to demand we go to war when they know that they and their loved ones will never have their lives on the line. They may see some wisdom in seeking solutions instead of war if their child might be on the front lines.

Pretty much, just like that. Mitt appears eager to send other people's children off to die. I find Mr. Romney's notion of using "illegals" to fight our wars while dangling the notion of citizenship in front of them to be particularly reprehensible.

It's a funny thing. Our military appears to be highly conservative but when you look at who serves, you get people like Joe Biden's son, Jerry Costello's son, both children of highly successful democrats. I just don't see the children of highly successful republicans joining the military voluntarily. I could, of course, be wrong about that. I just don't hear of any republican's kids signing up and haven't actually researched it.

For most American Citizens, these wars have been out of sight, out of mind, except for the cost of the Military/Industrial Complex to taxpayers. When Congress wants to save defense costs, they do it on the backs of our military personnel.

I know all about that. It never stops either. It continues with the retirees. They are correct when they say the military is used to sacrificing. It just isn't always a voluntary sacrifice.

They should stop and think it through. The military doesn't pay very well unless one is an officer. The enlisted tend to be eligible for welfare benefits. At any rate they were during the time the hubby was active. They can fill the ranks now because our economy is so horrid but that's not a permanent condition. Eventually, we will boom once again and no one sane would take a job in the military under those parameters.

I think America has lost it's heart somewhere along the way. It's unethical to send people off to war and not tend to those who come back maimed. Not that that stops congress - those people mostly have no honor nor ethics. I say mostly because there are a handful of decent people serving, just not enough of them.

I dunno, John. Like Susan said, if we had a better economy, the GOP hawks would have a tough time convincing kids to join uo to become cannon fodder. They like it the way it is. Volunteers that can't find a job anywhere else are easier to control.

John, we are all well aware of that. We also know that no politician will put himself out of work.

However if we insist on waging one war after another while shafting those who enlist, you are simply not going to get anyone to sign up once our economy improves.

By the way, during the Iraq war, Blackwater was hiring ex GI's to be mercenaries. One of my co worker's husband (E-6 ret.) was offered six figures to start. We may have to go that route in lieu of the draft but it is hellishly expensive. It also tends to make enemies for us since hired guns aren't bound by the same standards as the military.

And the mercenaries are hired by the CIA & the State Dep't.which keeps their costs off the books as far as the military budget is concerned. Petraus as CIA Director was a sign of the merging of the CIA & the military for our undercover covert wars of the future.

You would think 400 million Arabs could smash 2 million Jews. Some would say the Arabs must be pretty dang stupid. It's not that they are stupid. It's because the Arab Muslims don't have a God.

A lot of people are so stupid and I do mean stupid that say the reason Israel can hold back 400 millions Arabs is because of the US's backing.

Is the Jewish State prepared to fight endless war to survive? If all that you see is a nail, your only response is to use a hammer. This dispute is sorely in need of a mediator.

Well OK, despite your thoughts on my "who's who" list of friends and my thoughts that your friends list represents the "who's who" of the radical left fringe wackos, the video that I provided is factually accurate. So, how do you figure that suddenly it will all work out if the enemies of Israel move in as next door neighbors? How, given their history, can it possibly be a good thing? Wouldn't the UN have to provide a multi-national force to keep the peace, if the nations of the world would actually agree to put their forces in the midst of such a deadly situation? What are you thoughts and details? Being open minded is great, but reality tends to mess that all up. I don't see it all working out for the best. Who will insure security in the area?

What's your alternative? Endless war in the middle east? That can only result in tragedy for all concerned. A negotiated two-nation agreement is the only solution that common sense dictates, & building on land whose ownership has not been agreed to is certainly not the way to seek a peace initiative.

"Common sense dictates" while throwing out all common sense? I don't know what alternative would change things though. It was a war that the Palestinians started with Israel that brought about them losing land. Would "A negotiated two-nation agreement" end the fighting and bring about a lasting peace? I doubt that. Israel MUST be safe, and this "agreement" would do nothing to insure their safety, in fact, it would insure their destruction. If you watched that video, you would see that the Palestinians have never lived up to a single agreement, ever. The Palestinians will never let Israel live in peace. I think you know that Jim.
