For at least a hundred years, the Prudential Insurance Company has used the image of Gibraltar in connection with the “solid†insurance products that they offer.
At the southern tip of the Iberian Peninsula, not far from North Africa, this heavily-fortified area and the looming promontory has been a contested gateway to the Mediterranean Ocean for centuries. Since the early 18th century, Gibraltar has been a possession of the English Crown,
I did not realize how long-standing the advertising association to Gibraltar had been promoted until I found a wonderful postcard painting.
This art postcard shows a painted scene of oyster mongers at the wharf in Gribraltar.
The reverse shows that the postcard was a promotion of the Prudential Insurance Company. The company headquarters were in Newark, New Jersey.
The card does not appear t have been mailed, but was presented to Sadie DeVries by her Cousin Lambert.
The card was addressed, so we know that Sadie DeVries lived in Clifton, New Jersey around 1910. Clifton is now a city of 85,000 people lying north of Newark.
