George Timothy Clooney (born May 6, 1961), American actor, film director, producer, and screenwriter.  For his work as an actor, he has received three Golden Globe Awards and an Academy Award.  Clooney is also noted for his political activism, and has served as one of the United Nations Messengers of Peace since January 31, 2008.  Clooney's humanitarian work includes his advocacy of finding a resolution for the Darfur conflict, raising funds for the 2010 Haiti earthquake, 2004 Tsunami, and 9/11 victims, and creating documentaries such as Sand and Sorrow to raise awareness about international crises.  He is also a member of the Council on Foreign Relations.

Despite the yammering dimbulbs who pop out of the Gatherine woodwork, the number of intelligent, well-informed people here make it necessary for me to think very carefully about my comments, and I am forced to clarify and tighten up my thinking when I write comments. Except on this site, of course. You guys will believe anything.

Now we know who was behind the demand for ballots in Latin, while of course obstructing perfectly reasonable voter ID laws.
I was born in this country, Pete. American-born citizens have no need of a green card, so in that, you are correct. Besides, sometimes it seems best to abandon the common tongue so that only erudites such as yourself might understand.

Sadly, Gerald, those days are gone when it comes to such well known languages, dead or alive. Google Translate can handle them quite well.

(Navajo, perhaps? It's been done, but if you only want to exclude the unwashed masses, it should still work.)
Actually, it was a Wyandotte, Michigan hospital which was being used by the US Navy back in September, 1945. I'll scan it for your perusal as soon as I'm bored enough to look for it.
Latin is so much easier for me, Aniko. My Navajo is limited to words I've encountered in Tony Hillerman and Aimée & David Thurlo mysteries.
And I am quite beholden to Google Translate, especially their latest "Alpha", with the new "Language Detect" feature!

aniko, I've got a copy of Kii Baghan Haz'ąągi: Naaltsos aląąjį' wólta’ígíí (Kee's Home: a Beginning Navajo/English Reader); that might help. (Sorry, I can't put an accent on one of the "ą"s).

Gerald, I too was born in the Navy: North Island Naval Hospital (Family Medical Center), Coronado CA. Coronado is almost Mexico.

I figure that with four years of Latin in prep school, I need to get my money's worth out of it (even if I was a scholarship boy).
I only had two years of it, but it has served me well. As for your Navajo title, Google Translate thought it was Filipino--Paroxysms of hilarity have moved me to fall off of my chair!

The new Google Translate is the first one that seems to do a pretty decent job with Hungarian - so there goes that one, too...

Hey, I did think I left a response before, but then I didn't see it anywhere.
The way I see it, the losing candidate was merely universally disliked, at least by those who are capable of independent thought. Mexican birth isn't necessarily an iron-clad guarantee of success in politics. Nor, I think, is an obscene wad of money.

And the new Google Translate at least seems to work reasonably well with Latin, French, Italian, and Spanish--those are the only languages I've tried. They haven't yet tackled Navajo, it seems.
And Pete--that CJ and the Fish concert must've been before my time. The times I was planted dead center of the stage at the Avalon Ballroom, I can attest to Barry Melton playing his ass off on lead guitar, sweat pouring off of him by the bucketload! But as for CJ being too high to remember the words, fortunately there were lengthy phrases where he sang without words, and was without a doubt so full of LSD-25 that it was palpable in the atmosphere! My own heightened senses nearly doubled in intensity just being in their proximity.

This was from an account CJ gave on a radio broadcast in 1977: What a Long Strange Trip It's Been: 10 Years After the Summer of Love. Melton and Barthol were both under 21 at the time, and the band had dropped acid as the were approaching the Bay Bridge toll booth. The problem was not the words, it was the fact that the "adult" members of the band couldn't remember the order of the songs on the tape deck, so they'd let the tape get way ahead before they could figure out that it was Bass Strings or whatever, then race to catch up, but overtake and outdistance the recorded song. They did this for the first three or four songs, then gave up and C. Joe made his announcement.

Last I heard (and that was a long time ago), Melton was still recording occasionally, but spending most of his time as an environmental lawyer in the Tahoe area.

CJ & the Fish used to play around Ludwig's Fountain at Cal, but I didn't like rock in those days, so I'd walk way around to avoid them. I'll hold my ass if you want to kick it for me.
Barry Melton does indeed play gigs all over the Bay Area, and here in Marin especially, though he somehow finds time to devote to his law practice--I've always been awed by his syle of guitar work, and he's a damn personable character, a trait I rarely apply to attorneys. I guess he must've attained his majority by the time I first saw him in 1968 at the Avalon Ballroom, but then again, I never knew Chet Helms or any of his Family Dog folks to check anybody's ID.
Here's a clip of him playing Chuck Berry's "Thirty Days" in SF this past February. He has a lot less hair and a lot more belly.

According to a Spanish saying, a man needs to be just a little more handsome than the devil, while English speakers speak about some men being devilishly handsome. One of these probably applies here.
Gee, I hadn't noticed that my devilishly good looks have ever provided me with an advantage, but then, I've never really given it any thought.
