Inspired by Jim Kane's Texas to United Nations: Stay Out of Our Polling Places
Hmmm, two examples of 'voter suppression/disenfranchisement' (from this page (March 2012) ...NAACP Brings U.S. Voting Rights Problems Before UN Human Rights Commission):
"...Accompanying NAACP leaders are delegates Austin Alex and Kemba Smith.
Alex, a student at Texas Christian University, will not be able to vote this year under a new Texas law that does not recognize his California drivers license as a valid form of identification..."
Oh good grief... He is a university student after all and he did find his way to the UN; you'd think he could also figure out how to become a resident of Texas and obtain Texas ID if he wants to vote in Texas... unless he wants to be able to vote in both Tex as well as Cal?Anyway it's not like elections just come up all of a sudden... there's usually time to plan these things out in order for him to be able to vote in his own home state if he doesn't want to actually become a Texas citizen.  Voter suppression...  +sheesh+"...Smith is barred from voting in the state of Virginia under legislation that prohibits the formerly incarcerated from the polls. Smith had been convicted of a drug-related offense in 1992, but was later granted clemency by President Clinton when the president learned she had been convicted without ever selling, handling or using drugs..."As if receiving a pardon from President Frees-terrorists Clinton lends her an air of innocence.. FALN Terrorist Appealing Denial of Parole . . .Aside from that, Kemba Smith's story is definitely a sad one ... Still, it is one repeated many times over by girls from every strata of society and from every race.  They go for ghe bad boys. But even though it's a much more compelling (if self inflicted in some ways) story than the other guy's, for many reasons, the bottom line for Kemba is (in light of what little I know of her at this moment in time) instead of it being a story of possible ongoing voter suppression, it's actually a commonly known story of warning to young women and young men:Choose Your Friends and Lovers With at least as much Care as you would choose coffee or shoes or a new car. Choose them as if your life and freedom depends upon it because as Kemba found out, someday it might. No one forced Kemba to hang out with the big man on campus... and no one forced her to stay with him after he started to abuse her, and no one forced her to concede her will to his in any number of other illegal activities... She chose to allow all of it (for whatever reason). That said ... 24 years for using bad judgement?2... 3... 5 maybe; but 24? Sheesh!I'm very glad she got her sentence commuted but I still don't understand where her voter suppression or disenfranchisement comes in because she is not barred from voting in Virginia ... not forever anyway. She can have her rights restored. There is a process but seems like she also thinks whining to the UN is the better route than applying to the Commonwealth to have her rights restored?Guess that's her choice.   Again... +sheesh+
You can read about the delegation (including Mr. Ben Jealous himself)Â here too.
