Mitt Romney Canceled Trick or Treating

I would go out with my kids anyway. So arrest us!

In my area it has been completely canceled. people are really upset over this.

I agree with Allison. Go out anyway!! Get the whole damn town to go out anyway, and see what the idiots do about it.

I know alot of parents are planning to. I just found out trick or treating n another town near me. I am going to take my kids there.

I like that idea the best, trick Romney into telling the truth, then do the same to Obama .... imagine if both told the truth for once.

Yeah, I couldn't believe it either. I found out through Facebook. I thought it was a joke. Than I looked up the local paper and sure enough...I was like wow! Really? I am wondering what is next Christmas?

I'd pack up the kids and go to a different town!

My boyfriend said he was going to make sure my daughter will still be able to go trick or treating. Kids like her don't understand politics.

How about having neighborhood parties for the kids in a church basement or a school gym? Even a block party for the kids would be fun if the parents all pitched in.
I know when Obama came to Springfield it put the whole city in shut down. There is a big hospital complex there and it was hard for visitors or people with appointments to get through. There were a lot of angry people.

That's a very good idea!! Better yet, does your town have a local Mormon Ward? (LDS Chapel) If so, what a GREAT WAY to honour Mitt. Put a big sign out, and advertize!! INVITE HIM!!!

I say this, because my husband is a Mormon, and Mormons have absolutely no problem with Hallowe'en. They will allow their kids to go Trick-Or-Treating, but they will also hold parties for the entire family in their chapels. The kids can go to one, or both, or whatever. If any parent is worried about safety, they can bring the kids to the Mormon party, and have nothing to worry about.

Nancy that is a great idea. Thank you. I'll see if others want to pitch in. I know I can not afford to throw a party myself. But if others helped it would be different.

It doesn't take much to make kids happy. Someone can make cookies or cupcakes, someone else can bring cider, another apples for dunking. If no one is good at freehand you can get Halloween stencils for face painting. It doesn't have to be elaborate as the kids just want to be together.

Please stay tuned for an article I'm going to post later tonight, when I get it all together. I found a really need site with cool candy and stuff, that can actually add a little touch of "red white and blue" to halloween! :) In other words, people can have it both ways.

That is a shame, but many communities do have trick or treating on other nights so I can't see why your town couldn't do that as well.

Many communities do it on different nights because that is their tradition. The problem I have with it is because it was not switched. I would feel different if it was the president. But Romney is not yet.

I would be upset if that happened here.

Yes, I will explain, and I wil also explain the humour behind the initial comment.

Honey Boo Boo is a spoiled little beauty-queen who escaped from Toddlers in Tiaras, only to land her OWN reality TV show on TLC. Her catch phrase is "you've been Red-Neck-ognized!" in a very bratty voice with a very heavy Southern Accent (Walker says Georgia) that makes people either laugh, or cringe.

Anyway, a few days ago someone asked Romney if he liked her better than Snooky (I think Snooky is someone from Jersey Shore, not that I've ever seen that show either).

So on one of the daily news/talk shows, someone asked Honey Boo Boo, who's real name is Alana, who she liked better; Mitt Romney, or Barak Obama," She didn't know who either of them were, so someone mentioned that Romney liked Snooky better. So when asked again Honey, who could not pronounce his name said:

"I like Ma-rack O-Baa-Maa!!!!!!!!!!"

So the JOKE here is that if the mayor will cancel trick-or-treating for Romney, it's no wonder a little child almost endorced Obama.

Morgan's comment, and my explanation, have nothing to do with who to vote for, just a continuation of a running political joke sarted by a very famous, and very loud toddler.

Well, I wouldn't blame it on Gov. Romney. I'm sure he had nothing to do with your mayor cancelling trick or treating. It sounds like the mayor didn't like the event and looked for a reason to cancel.

I've hated every time Obama comes to town here, and I guess he'll be here again soon. They shut down the highways for hours.

When Obama came here, a lot of things were cancelled. My husband ended up at the airport for hours because everything was delayed for hours.

I really don't blame Romney, More like my city's Mayor. but it did work great for a attention getter title don't you think?

Obama came to one of the colleges not to long ago. He didn't come on a tradition, nor did he cause all kinds of commotion like it has with Romney coming.

I agree about your title, and it made your point perfectly!! Also, the fact that Obama's visit didn't stir up traditions, proves a perfect point! Hallowe'en existed long before Romney went into politics.

Kissing babies as a ploy...well that doesn't really surprise me to be honest with you. Isn't that is something that is more expected to see a president compared to them doing that because they want to?

In some instances, "trick or treating" has become a dangerous practices. There are folk who have been found guilty of actually putting lethal things in candy for kids. If I had kids, I would find something else for them to do. In my town, the fire departments actually have a party for the children, and we also have churches that have activities. The kids seem to enjoy these activities, and they are safe. Nobody "tricks" or knocks on anybody's doors.

Guelph has always been the safest place in the world for Halloween. However, I've often heard sad things about scary stuff that happens at Halloween. Your ideas are fantastic!! I miss Halloween, living in an apartment in a not-very-residential part of town. Used to celebrate with a friend of mine every year, but he recently moved into a retirement home.

Yes, scary things happen all the time. Not just for Halloween. As long as you use caution and do things safely. Trick or treating can be alot of fun. I always take my kids in areas or neighborhoods I know.

One year an old grandfatherly gentleman wanted to give out candy apples. He let the police know he was going to do it, AND had calling cards made that were attached to each apple, with his name, phone number, etc. Also, he only gave them to kid who were with their parents, so that he could ask the parents if he could give the children an apple.

Not at mine either. That's because I live in the country and nobody bothers with us.

I stopped doing it when my daughter was two. I just didn't like the images that it conjures up and it made me feel like I was celebrating evil. To each his own, though.

wow well we don't really do Halloween at my house either. last year I let my daughter have a Halloween party on the Saterday before Halloween from 6 to 8 and we had pizza punch and I bought some candy. Then on Halloween night we went to a church for some fun and games. They got their faces painted and bobbed for apples and the real little ones fished for ducks and got a prize. They frosted cookies and cupcakes. I was told the same church is doing it again this year so that is what we will do. Oh they had a bean bag game and the hay bales that the kids sing that song and they sit down real fast.

I have no idea what I am doing now. But i am sure something will come up.

I agree. it's not Mitt's fault, rather the MAYOR. However, there are things that can be done.

a) All kids and parents go out anyway!!! Let's see the Mayor lock up the whole dang town.

b) TELL MITT what the jack-A mayor did in "his" honour, and see if he can make the mayor feel a little ashamed.

c) Have a "Mitt" party at the local Mormon church!! :) Get the Mormons involved, have a Halloween party there! Hubby tells me that every Mormon ward he's visited in the States have done nice things for the children on Halloween. Maybe get Mitt involved with the local children. Might gain him a few points that way.

You bring up a good point, here. Even if it wasn't Mitt himself, who canceled the tradition, it was still the mayor, or Municiple government. Government is government, even if it's only local.

This is kind of interesting. Political pundits have been saying that Ohio is the most crucial swing state in this election, and whatever way Ohio goes will be the way the nation will go. Whether that's so or not, I have no idea, but that's what they're saying.

Anyway, when I first read your post I thought that they were the ones that arranged the date for the Romney appearance, but according to this article, that's not so. OF course, according to that article, he is going to be in your town before Halloween too, so I don't know what to think. "Bob Armstrong, mayor of Defiance, Ohio — which we wrote about Monday – tells us that town officials have been informed that Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney will pay a visit later this week."

If he did plan on being there on Halloween it wouldn't seem to be a very good political move if Ohio votes are so important. There are enough people that celebrate Halloween practically like I do Christmas that would be very put off by his spoiling of their celebration. That's not going to endear him to them.

If it true that Ohio is the most crucial state, well, canceling trick or treating will make a different in my county. I am sure of that, as alot of people are upset about it.

Ah, so it does seem they rescheduled Halloween by that link. That is probably a good thing. The Mayor did upset alot of people by canceling it. My Facebook page was full of people complaining about it from people in my area. Thanks for sharing that, I will be passing that along.

You would think when it was scheduled the Mayor or whomever is in charge of the Holidays would of know it was on Halloween - Trick or treating. Halloween is important to me as that is one year that I have been together with my boyfriend. It is something to celebrate.

Yeah, the reason they think your state's vote is so critical is because they always vote the winner. They've never voted for a losing presidential candidate since 1990.

Not that it makes any difference, but just because party means everything to some people, you might want to let people know that your mayor is a Democrat.

Exactly, it really never has had anything to do with our religion anyway, its an ancient custom performed by people who were trying to protect their crops, back then they were pagan and the scary costums were supposed to scare the evil spirits, how funny is that right?

As for canceling Halloween, um I don't think so, its not fair to the little ones who have so much fun dressing up, they can't vote anyway.

Leah, I would not dare attempt to speak for all churches, because I have never been there. The churches I am familiar with that have parties on Halloween are those who attempt to acquaint kids with the story behind that day and they make it a fun thing doing so. Just as there is a history behind Christmas, there is also a history behind Halloween, and the children do not wear "spooks, witches, and ghost" attire. It would be so hypocritical to teach that God has not given us the spirit of fear as the scriptures proclaim, then, have parties and encourage the children to "scare" someone by laughing with them when they do it. Personally, I believe both sides should be taught to the children, and not just one side. Everyone mostly knows the history of Christmas, but I wonder how many have any history of Halloween...the sad thing about Halloween is the season is becoming more and more dangerous. A youngster down the street whom I do not know, and whose family lives off foodstamps threw an egg on my window because I had no candy to give her. on Halloween. Maybe, I should not have opened the door:)

I did not say "all churches" The Mormon reference came from my Mormon husband who has been involved with LDS wards in several States. I just asked him if, where he was, they banned any costumes. His answer? "Nah. They were all in good taste."

Neither halloween or christmas originated in christianity, both were celebrated for centuries before the catholics decided to make it theirs.

Oh, I understood your point, Leah, and my comment was not meant to imply that you said "all Churches". Nowhere did I see you said that, and nowhere did I say you said that:) I just needed to clarify my personal history by eliminating any possible hint of stereotyping.

The way Christmas is celebrated has been going on in Germanic tribes since the ice age, it started as a pagan ritual to help relieve the close proximity and cold of the winters that they endured, Jesus was not born in December.

The problem with written communication is that there is no font to reflect voice inflection, etc. Therefore, people can mean one thing, and it may appear to say another, even if the words are exactly the same. :) I just make it a point to take the written word as literally as possible, so the person wil know I... s-a-w... e-a-c-h... l-e-t-t-e-r. :)

Kids don't really trick or treat around my neighborhood. A lot of parents throw Halloween parties now because it is safer. Halloween is not the same as when I was a kid.

Okay, boys and girls, Romney is doing the rounds in Defiance, Ohio as we speak. All your conspiracy theories that he was trying to break a fine American tradition and make little kids' lives miserable can now be put to rest.
