The 50 Shades of Grey movie won't have a cast anytime soon, so don't get too excited about the weekly reports claiming that actors and actresses are in talks to play Christian Grey and Anastasia Steele.
The screenplay has to be written and a director has to be chosen before casting talks begin, so for now all Fifty fans can do is campaign for their favorite Christians and Anas online in hopes that the producers and E. L. James will take notice of their choices.
And the choices that can be found on the internet just keep getting stranger and stranger, as evidenced by the list of Christian Grey options on What Culture. The site includes some popular picks like Ian Somerhalder and Ryan Gosling, but some of its picks for the 50 Shades of Grey movie are a bit wacky—could you imagine Screech from Saved by the Bell playing a man who is so incredibly sexy that he turns a beautiful virgin on to crazy bedroom contraptions like butt plugs and nipple clamps? Perhaps Dustin Diamond made the list because he has starred in a sex tape.
Then there's Harry Potter star Tom Felton. There has been a lot of buzz about Emma Watson playing Anastasia Steele, so those who enjoy freaky Harry Potter fanfiction might appreciate this pairing. Emma probably also wouldn't mind hopping in a bathtub with Tom since she has admitted to having a crush on him.
Taylor Lautner is another odd option since he's way too young for the role. Some Twilight fans would like to see Robert Pattinson as Christian Grey and Kristen Stewart as Anastasia Steele, and there's also been talk about Ashley Greene as Ana and Kellan Lutz as Christian's brother Elliot. Since 50 Shades began as Twilight fanfiction, a lot of Twihards would like to see a Twilight connection in the casting of the movie.
Nicholas Hoult also made the list, and he's one of the more intriguing options there. He's only 22 years old, but perhaps he could play an older character. Nicholas is probably best known for starring in the raunchy TV series Skins and for playing Beast in X-Men: First Class, but his star is definitely on the rise—he was cast in the romantic movie Warm Bodies (think Twilight but with zombies); he's playing Jack in the fairytale flick Jack the Giant Killer; and he's won a role in Mad Max: Fury Road. He's also dating his super-successful X-Men costar Jennifer Lawrence, and they might just be the most talented couple in Hollywood (sorry, Robsten).
So what do you think of some of these more unusual choices for the role of Christian Grey? Can you picture Nicholas Hoult in the billionaire's Red Room of Pain? And if he gets cast as Christian, should Jennifer Lawrence play his Anastasia Steele?
