In the days when salaries were small and players played that really loved the game we all saw Alex Karras, who played for over 12 seasons for the Detroit Lions. He retired at the age of 35 in 1970. 4 time all pro defensive tackle.
I remember him for Monday Night Football with the late great Howard Cosell, who always had something to say and Frank Gifford. The 3 of them were my favorites to tell me about football, which I no longer watch on Monday Night.
He met his future wife, Susan Clark on Babe and he played George Zaharias. Most people will remember him playing the Dad on Webster and his wife was on the show also.
Sadly, the last few years haven't been easy with cancer and kidney problems. He was only 77 and I agree with his wife all the hits he took in football shortened his life. I'm hoping football is made safer with all the deaths in recent years with men unable to remember the important things in life. Rest in peace you will be missed by so many people.
