When DWTS All-Stars 2012 returned for a third week of action on October 8, Indy car driver Helio Castroneves was all smiles as he and Chelsie Hightower delivered their Iconic Dances night performance. But did the spritely season 5 champ do enough to continue his personal quest for Mirrorball glory?
During their rehearsal segment, Helio confessed that finding himself in the bottom two the previous week was a "confusing and scary" experience. The duo opted to re-create fellow all-star Apolo Ohno and then-partner Julianne Hough's "Mr. Pinstripe Suit" Quickstep from season 4, and Helio vowed to "fight back" and earn the fans' votes once again.
Helio and Chelsie looked awesome in their bold black-and-white striped costumes, and the affable celeb opened the number with a leap reminiscent of the one he delivered during his season 5 "Hey Pachuco" dance, and the crowd noticed. The dance was filled with plenty of fast-paced moves and fueled by joy, but a gaffe in the middle—which happened when Helio stepped on Chelsie's slightly-too-long dress—threw him off just a bit.
Still, the Dancing with the Stars judges very much appreciated the effort. Carrie Ann Inaba called it "so good" before dubbing Helio "the quickstep king." But then, of course, she noted the slip-up. Len Goodman said, "this dance deserves to be back next week" and called it top-notch. Bruno Tonioli said it was "absolutely brilliant" from the beginning but noted that the dress issue made him lose timing. Always a good sport, Helio then praised wardrobe for doing "an amazing job to make me look like a pimp."
Despite the mistake, Helio and Chelsie scored a very respectable 25.5 for the Quickstep, a mark which places them in the middle of the pack entering tonight's double elimination.
So are they in big trouble? Unfortunately, Helio and Chelsie could very well find themselves headed home. After all, they were just in the bottom two last week. However, they could also find themselves benefitting from extra votes as a result of their near-elimination. So which way will the voting tide turn? Watch the DWTS All-Stars 2012 results show tonight on ABC to see how it all pans out.
