The Fifty Shades of Grey casting controversy continues. And the candidates vying for the coveted roles continue to step up and speak out. In a recent interview, True Blood vampire guy, Alexander Skarsgaard, dished on being a rumored candidate for the Christian Grey role in the movie version of E.L. James's unbelievably popular "mommie porn" novel. He also talked about his role in a commercial for Calvin Klein's new men's fragrance, Encounter. It has been suggested that the ad's film noirish ambience and sexually charged imagery were influenced by 50 Shades of Grey.
Although a 50 Shades of Grey fan video starring Skarsgaard has yet to be made, the 2-minute Calvin Klein video is certainly reminiscent of many such fan made teasers. The commercial features lots of intense close-ups of "Skarsgaard driving through a rain storm to a house on a cliff," where he eventually has an encounter—presumably of the sexual kind—with model Lara Stone. Of course, unlike the action in Fifty Shades of Grey, there are no whips, chains, or butt clamps. The commercial ends just before the couple's kiss. However, there are some nice shots of the waves crashing on the rocks below their bedroom window.
Whatever.
The Encounter commercial's darkness allowed the reporter to segue into a question about Skarsgaard possibly playing Christian Grey. Much like, Ryan Gosling, Emma Watson, Ian Somerhalder, and many other contenders for the coveted male and female leading roles, Skarsgaard claimed—er—admitted he'd never read the books.
"I haven't read the books," he mused. "I know how tremendously successful they are and how people are obsessed, so of course I'm flattered if some people out there want to see me do that. But it's difficult to say. Step one is always read the script for me. I get the script, I read it and then I feel something or I don't. You either connect and you feel like this is a character that you want to spend a couple of months with or you don't. Or you feel like I'm going to learn something about myself in working on creating this character. Or you're not challenged by it. Or you're not intrigued. So it's so difficult to say before having read the script whether you are interested in it or not."
So, there you have it. There are certainly skads of people who would love to see Skarsgaard in the titular role of Christian Grey. Perhaps his True Blood fans should get cracking and start sending him the books.
Just saying.
