Legos, the time-favored toy for generations has really stepped up their game lately. They always were nice toys back when I Was a kid, but the sets now have brought a new level of realism that I hadn't noticed until Gideon became a Lego kid.
The car sets have the coolest details from custom molded bumper pieces to license plate stickers. There's TV show themed sets from Harry Potter to Pirates of The Caribbean and Spongebob Squarepants. Here's a photo of one of Gideon's Spongebob sets. The Krabby patty mobile and the Krusty Krab, lol.

They have girl themed sets out with purple and pink bricks galore. They even have playground sets. When I was a kid I remember making skateboards and swing sets with wheel hubs after removing the rubber wheels. Not needed now when you get some of these sets!
There's also a series of highly detailed buildings for the 16+ age group. Yeah, you saw right 16+. I thought I was seeing things when I saw that, lol. The sets are VERY large, very rare (only available on Amazon, Lego.com and Legoland stores from what I've seen) and as you probably expected, they carry quite a hefty price tag.

Wouldn't it be my luck that we discovered these sets browsing online for the police station set Gideon liked for his City collection. Gideon was sitting here, too at the time and we saw a pet shop. What's that? I thought? Sounds CUTE. It is cute... and one of those 16+ $150 sets. Wouldn't you know it Gideon starts begging for it. Yeah. $150 isn't anywhere near the $30 price tag his gifts usually fit in. Not remotely close. My first reply was it's just too much, I'm sorry. Soon after that I got the hair-brained idea to save and save and save my Swagbucks gift cards and surprise the heck out of him with it.
It was especially hard seeing him hold it in the Legoland store gazing longlingly at this set he wanted so badly. It was hard, but I had already planned to get it for him for his birthday. He walked out with a cute camper set from his gramma that day as part of his birthday gift.
Long story short, it took 5-6 months to save up for the set and it arrived here just a little while ago. I'm amazed at it. Really, I am. It was a lot of money and work, but I can honestly say it's worth everything it took to get it here. I can NOT wait to see his surprise at getting the set that I said was all but impossible to get. :)

This is the box it came in next to Anneke for size comparison. It's HUGE, and it really isn't much smaller than the box it's in. It's also HEAVY. Six POUNDS to be exact. That's a lot for Legos lol.- As you can see, the box is pretty much the size of the set. And Anneke LOVES playing in the box, lol. The extra room was taken up with brown butcher paper, which is perfect, since I was wondering how I could get this GIANT roll of wrapping paper without Gideon getting suspicious. You see, he's only expecting the newest Wimpy Kid book for his birthday, which comes out 2 days after his birthday... so there would be NO need for wrapping paper for that. Well, we can use the butcher paper and Anneke and I can "color" it for him!
Here's some photos of the set. Check it out for yourself and be amazed.
The front of the set. Anneke just HAD to check it out, too, lol. As you can see it's 2 buildings together the pet shop and an apartment building. They are 3 stories tall and measure 11in x 10in when built.

Back of box... there's photos of the little things closer, if you want to see. They are attached. The bottom photo is a couple of the other sets that can connect to this one to make a highly detailed city. Of course they, too are $150 each, lol. Some are more on Amazon, as they tend to mark them up at times...

Detail of the BACK of the set. The animals, animal accessories, paint rollers, bikes and everything is in here!

Gideon will be VERY happy to see this in around 5 weeks... and Anneke is pretty happy with the box, lol. Everyone's happy hooray!

Have you gotten anything special with your gift cards and earnings online for your kids? Do your kids like Legos as well? What are some of their (or your) favorite sets?

All joking aside, we decided that the set was worth every penny of that $150 we paid for it and all those months it took to gather the gift cards. Can't say that about many toys these days. Most times it's complaints that they were not nearly worth the asking price.
Either way I feel you are winning at going to any of them.
