I feel I must confess right at the outset of this review that I tried a couple of the techniques in this book and -- despite my own fairly entrenched skepticism -- I sheepishly admit that they worked. I feel I should make clear that I don't exactly know WHY they worked -- it could have been due to some psychological or physiological response pattern that I'm not aware of (beings as how I'm not a psychologist -- although, I did study psychology in college) or, it could be that the principles suggested by the authors works on some grand cosmic level just as they say it does. At this point, I don't honestly think I'm capable of making a completely impartial decision on this point... All I know is: What I tried WORKED.
Granted, there's a whole passel-load of books out there that claim to be able to teach you how to solve personal problems, manifest more positive energy and obtain things that you want in your life. I have noticed, however, that few of them actually deliver on their promises.
Most of them are written strictly from one person's (the author's or the biography subject's) point of view. A few of them reference the work(s) of a couple of other researchers or "experts" in the particular field they're hawking. I don't remember ever reading another similarly-themed work, however, that contained as many references as this one does to so many authorities in such widely varying fields.
This, of course, is a "good thing". Actually, a "great thing"... Because, when one is dealing with rather esoteric subject-matter such as the power of visualization, the "law of attraction" of better things into one's life and how to remove psychic "blockages", a synergy of techniques and methods (even amongst those generally acknowledged as experts in the "New Age" field) has historically been difficult to come by and the prospect of any level of confirmation whatsoever of such theories by those in the mainstream scientific community was even far less likely. However, fairly recent developments in quantum physics and quantum mechanics regarding "the observer effect" (1), "the superposition principle" (1) and "Bell's theorem" (1) appear to have moved the two disciplines considerably closer together than ever before.
A partial list of the authorities in "Almost Super-Human" include:
- Kam Yuen, Shaolin Grandmaster
- Rhonda Byrne, Author of "The Secret"
- The Masonic Order
- Li Hongzhi, Founder of "Falun Gong" (or "Falun Dafa", literally "Dharma Wheel Practice")
- Dr. Ihaleakala S. Hew Len, President, The Foundation of I, Inc.
- Dr. Frank Kinslow
- Warren J. Hamerman, Author, "21st Century Science and Technology"
- Rupert Sheldrake, Biologist
- Dr. Richard Bartlett, D.C., N.D., Founder of "Matrix Energetics"
- Dr. Masaru Emoto, President Emeritus, International Water for Life Foundation
The authors also maintain a webpage called "Heal Yourself in Ten Minutes" (http://www.HealYourselfInTenMinutes.com) where you can participate in a free, 5-step exercise designed to help you overcome your physical, emotional and/or psychological difficulties. (I actually did the exercise and found it quite helpful.)
Overall, I found "Almost Super-Human" filled to the brim with many helpful exercises and methods by which one can gain better insight into the causes behind some of the negativity we experience in our lives. The language and tone is infinity readable and understandable and the best thing is that the techniques given actually seem to work! (They did for me, anyway.) I would heartily recommend this book to anyone wanting to familiarize themselves with this school of thought or who may not have found similar works satisfactory.
