Yay for space opera!, September 16, 2012

This review is from: Speedwing (Kindle Edition) I have always enjoyed SF, and space opera, and this book is a good example of space opera. Lots of dog fights in space, etc., but what did surprise me was that there is a great deal more. While the plot was predictable, and there were no surprises, I had things figured out before they happened, the writing is adequate to good (except for one careless mistake, which was momentarily jarring, but no more), and the characters were nicely drawn. A few of them fleshed out and became people you could care about.
I think I liked this book because, even though all the parts were well represented in other books, they came together in a unique and pleasing way. Yes, this is space opera a la Star Wars, at least the dog fights. But it is also a coming of age novel, and we watch as our young hero slams against the harsh realities of life and learns to cope with them. His illusions are stripped away, he must deal with death, and he must learn that there are situations about which he can do little or nothing. His approach is heartening, because, at his core, he is a very decent, even compassionate young man.
While there is little in this book that is truly original, it is well worth reading, and I recommend it, for the fun (and rush) of space opera, but also for the people who inhabit this book, and for the way in which the author handles them and his story.
