As NBA Lakers rumors continue to revolve around which new personnel the team has acquired, or might get rid of, other debates are going on about the top superstars on their team, and LA's chances at winning a title. A recent examination of top shooting guards in the league, has Kobe among the top 10, but is he the best of them all?
A recent Lakers rumor talked about their player Matt Barnes and how he might stay in Los Angeles. Unfortunately, it might be as he heads over the LA Clippers. Meanwhile, the Lakers will be looking towards a bright future, despite the fact that they do have some aging superstars in Steve Nash and Kobe Bryant. In fact, some may argue they have 3 of the best players at their positions. Nash is a 2-time MVP, while Howard has won multiple defensive awards. Kobe Bryant is a storied champion, searching to become as legendary as Michael Jordan with another ring.
In a new Bleacher Report article, the top 10 shooting guards are listed out, and it's not surprising that Kobe is on the list. He ranks at the top spot, and rightfully so. Trailing Kobe Bryant at #2 is Dwyane Wade, followed by Joe Johnson, James Harden and Eric Gordon to round out the top five shooting guards. Those are certainly players most teams would love to acquire the services of, and in fact Brooklyn did acquire Joe Johnson for the upcoming 2012-13 season.
Back to Kobe Bryant. He's 34 years old, but still ranks at the top. The BR article notes that he is no longer a high flying dunker like he once was, with all those acrobatic moves. However, he has become a lot like Jordan did later in his career (after retirement). Kobe manages to take wiser shots and has improved his perimeter shooting to keep up with the scoring. That's not to say he still can't penetrate and score that way as well.
It's going to be interesting to see how both Kobe Bryant and Dwyane Wade play in the upcoming season, as they are each part of a "Big 3" on their respective teams. Wade has had to defer to LeBron James and it worked well, as the Heat went on to win the NBA Championship last season. Will Kobe do the same in Los Angeles, allowing D-Howard to become the top scoring weapon? Or will Kobe once again shoulder the load en route to another NBA title for LA? Either way, his legend will continue to grow as one of the top shooting guards in the game today.
