Meredith and Derek were two of the doctors in the plane crash as Grey's Anatomy came to an end, and while their survival has never been a question mark, they will be greatly affected by it. What's coming up for them this fall?
Grey's Season 9 Spoilers
According to TVGuide.com, Ellen Pompeo has previewed that while Meredith and Derek are "OK because they survived the plane crash, so they're happy to be alive," there will be "some trying times" ahead because of the injury Derek suffered to his hand. Before the crash, they had been planning to leave Seattle behind and move across country. That plan changed with the crash. Previous spoilers for Grey's Anatomy season 9 revealed that they'll be moving into their dream house and Callie will be working with Derek to fix his hand, so they'll be sticking around. While Meredith and Derek both survived the plane crash, Lexie did not, and while Meredith's going to be helping Derek with recovering from that injury, she's also going to need him to be there as she grieves. Could some frustrations come out as they both deal with what they have going on?
Pompeo also teased about Derek's hand, "I don't know if his hand will ever fully be recovered. She'll do what you have to do as a partner; you have to support your partner." While Callie is going to be working on helping Derek with his hand, it's still possible that it's never what it used to be and he'll need Meredith's support as he adjusts to what that means for his future as a surgeon. While it's hard to imagine something happening to limit Derek in the OR permanently, it is a storyline they could stretch out a bit to bring some drama and explore how Derek handles it over multiple episodes.
